While many of us would have heard the by now popular Bullah Shah on Tv or Radio or ... you get the picture... I feel impelled to recommend the complete album - Rabbi to all.
If you appreciate music and lead a stressful life and have a romantic heart, go for it.
The music is a combination of styles, ranging from pop, sufi and folk to good old balle balle.
However, what wins one over the sheer beauty of the https://lyrics. 3 of the songs have lyrics borrowed from other writers/ poets, the most famous being Bulleh Shah. The rest though have been written by Shergil himself.
The lyrics are simple enough to understand even without a good working knowledge of Punjabi, though a copy of both the lyrics and their translation has been thoughtfully provided with the CD. The tenor of the songs ranges from soul searching to sheer romantic and I would suggest that the songs be heard in a quiet environment, with dim or no lights.
Trust me, in a cesspool of rehashed songs and complete absence of taste, this fresh whiff of originality has pulled me back to music after a long spell. Mind I have nothing against the beautiful songs of yesteryear, but really, how long can the industry rest on someone elses laurels?
Thats another reason I bought this album... Shergil has actually prefered to struggle on for years than sell out - he was offered movie deals by various producers including Pooja Bhatt. He wanted to preserve his artistic rights and refused.
Apart from his obviously stellar character, Rabbi also offers a star studded supporting cast of musicians boasting of Sivamani, Javed Akhtar, Rakesh Chaurasia et al.
All I can say is, I recommend it wholeheartedly.
