MS ke log!!Buying a TV??Look at my review...Part 1

I remember those days when we all had BW TVs of brands EC, Crown, Dynora, Uptron, Keltron etc. We rejoiced when somebody in our lane bought First BW TV.

We all in our area gathered there and demanded for a cup of tea to that ?RICH UNCLE??  TV was a novelty item that time. Now, I feel we have come a long way from that?Today?s kids really miss that feeling?.Let me come out of that nostalgia.

So need to buy a feature rich COLOR TV?? Here are Siddharth?s bits and pieces of advices?

I have tried to avoid Tech Jargons in my review but you want that let me know

so here it begins..

  1. Size of your TV (Measured diagonally from corner to corner?Normally from 14? to 74?)

Decide it on Size of your room and at what distance you are likely to sit from the TV while watching it

The bigger the size, the farther you should sit so that you see a fine picture. If you sit very close to a big screen TV, you tend to see coarse grains, which tend to spoil your viewing pleasure. Experts suggest that the approximate distance you should sit from a TV is 6 times the size of the screen.

  1. Type of picture tube

 Pure flat: Expensive, Latest, Good Clarity.

The flatter the screen, the better is the view and greater is the viewing angle Truly Flat tubes greatly reduce room-light reflection, maximize and brighten contrast and colours, and have a wide viewing angle

 Full and flat square tubes(FFST):

Good combination of Features and Value for Money, Typically, the flatter the screen, the better the view. FST (Flat Square Tube) and FFST (Full Flat Square Tube) are technologies that reduce reflections and glare from light sources in the room resulting in a more consistent and easy to watch picture. I will prefer this.

 Flat Square tube(FST)

Round tube(Conventional). Normally 20’’ and below come only in the round tube variety. A drawback of the regular screens is that the natural curve of the screen will pick up light sources throughout the room.

Remember Simple equation ?More Flat, Deeper pockets?

  1. Quality of the picture

 In Showroom, check the TVS one by one and do not switch on Chains of TVs at time which will definitely confuse you.

 Check the quality of the picture by matching the skin tones in conditions.

 See the contrast, naturalness and liveliness of the colors. Also, check how many COLOR adjustments are provided. Generally, companies will fool us saying ?AUTOMATIC ADJUSTMENTS? of picture depending on LIGHT IN YOUR ROOM. Though, it is a good feature, also check whether how many features have MANUAL adjustments. Many TVs do not have adjustments to TINT, HUE, and SHARPNESS. So, Check it out without fail. Ask dealer about the explanations. Because ultimately, you are going to pay for that TV.

 Lights in Showroom are Focused halogen on wall and Ceilings. Due to its refection, you will always see a crisp and Shiny picture in Showroom and might differ from the way it may be seen in your house.

 Check all the resources like Normal Television from cable, DVD or VCD. You will not be able to judge difference in colors very easily if you check all TVs by connecting DVDs.

 Check if any personal preference settings or different Video status memories are there like Sports, Game, Normal, Custom(Settings saved as per User Preferences) etc which are presets

  1. Sound Quality

 Go for a good Stereo effect. But, do not forget TV is mainly used for watching the programmes. It is easy to connect a MONO television to existing Sound System which you have already, but can not change the picture quality, So I will take Sound factor to a backseat.

 Normally, 100-350 W is enough for normal human beings. For Audio lovers, I will suggest go for better output but ready to shell out some more.

 We can hear hi-frequencies and mid frequencies and thus misses some low frequency notes. To compensate this, new systems have been developed with a separate amplifier, enhancing the loudness of the low frequencies, which in turn, enhances the quality of sound.

 You can check for Surround Sound and Dolby Pro logic features but expensive so it is a personal choice. Decide on your own!!!

i. Number of Speakers

More number of speakers does not necessarily mean better quality sound. The speakers must be of good quality and the sound must be controlled and well balanced to obtain the best results from your television’s audio system. It is generally advisable that you check the television in the showroom before you buy it. Keep in mind the size of your room. Test the maximum volume of the television before buying, and avoid those televisions that do not give you a good sound output.

  1. Remote

All TVs these days come with remote controls but the functions on them vary. Some can simultaneously operate other electronic devices such as the VCR/VCD and stereo.

  1. Price Range

Check this out at dealer outlets only. BARGAIN A LOT!! (That is my favorite activity).Prices will range from 5, 000/- to 5, 00, 000/-

  1. Warranty

Check for maximum warranty. It varies from 1-7 years. Check for parts covered in warranty.
