Our Favourite Chocolate

Cadbury’s Diary Milk Chocolate is the oldest Chocolate Milk Bars in Indian market. Cadbury is a huge brand name through out the world and there may not be any country where it is not available. In India it is manufactured and marketed by Cadbury India Ltd.

The Process & The Product

Cacao, a tropical tree, is the source of Chocolate. Seeds or Beans from Cacao are used to make chocolate and cocoa. Different types of beans are available from different regions and colour varies from light brown to purple. These are blended to get the desired flavor and colour of the final product.

Processing the seeds include several steps like cleaning, roasting, hulling, blending, and grinding. Cleaned Cacao seeds without the shells are known as nibs. These nibs contain about 54 % cocoa butter and natural fat. Cocoa butter is prepared by fine grinding of nibs. Free flowing Chocolate Liquor is the mixture of cocoa butter and fine paste of nibs. Chocolate Liquor is the main ingredient of any chocolate products like baking chocolate, cocoa, milk chocolate, and plain chocolate.

Chocolate liquor, Milk Powder and Sugar are the basic ingredients in Diary Milk Chocolates. Extra doses of cocoa butter may be added to the chocolate liquor. All these are mixed well and then passes through several steps like shearing and rubbing actions to make smooth paste. This rubbing action helps to develop the much-loved flavour and smooth finish.

Dairy Milk Chocolate, sold in the form of bar, may be the most preferred form of chocolate. And there is very few in the market to beat Cadbury Dairy Milk Chocolate and I relish it since my child hood.

Cadbury’s Diary Milk produced in India need not be stored in fridge except in very hot summer. Quality is consistent.

Packing and Availability in India

Cadbury’s Diary Milk is available in many sizes. Smallest one is 13 gm in weight costing Indian Rs. 5/-. This tiny pack is available in any urban area and in many developed rural areas. This tiny pack helped Cadbury India to increase their sales volume because it is affordable by urban population.

Per capita chocolate consumption in India is around 160 gm in the urban areas compared to 8-10 kg in the developed countries. Per capita consumption in rural area may be 1/10th of urban areas. Chocolates in India are consumed as a pleasure and fun and never as food. Chocolate bars enjoy major share of the chocolate market. Cadbury is facing strong competition from its rivals like Nestle but still a leading player with about 65% of the market share.

Source of Quick Energy

Despite the fact that it is not considered as a substitute of food in India, Chocolate serves as both a confection and a food. Chocolate Diary Milk is having very pleasant (at least to me) flavour, and high food value. Chocolate contains carbohydrates, fats, protein, and several vitamins and minerals. It’s a source of quick energy and very useful for people like athletes, soldiers, explorers or anyone who requires high calorie food. They eat chocolate as a source of quick energy for carrying out their energy consuming tasks. With additives like nuts make it more nutritious alternate food.

Precautions (if you really bother about it)

It is quite natural to get addicted to such a wonderful product. Too many chocolate a day will surely spoil the teeth. Fine paste of chocolates can enter the tiny pours on our tooth and germs get growing there. I am 45 and I cannot say ‘No’ to Diary Milk so I cannot expect my 11 years old son to avoid it. Take some precautionary measures like cleaning and checking the teeth. Older one should take care of calorie.

Cadbury Family

Cadbury is a very old trusted name. It all started in Birmingham in England when John Cadbury started his family grocery shop with side business of cocoa and chocolate products in around 1824. His two sons, Richard and George, expanded their family business of cocoa and chocolate. Bournville, a town near Birmingham, was build by them as a part of expansion of their business.

Cadbury family is also known for their contribution in social reforms and considered as liberals. This family was in the forefront of adult education movement in England.
