Good Acting & Bad Direction

We, the Indian populace, are having always so many films around us - that the choice for an individual to pick a particular movie is - rather a difficult one. After a long time I managed to see a film which was complete - in certain senses - although it definitely lacks on many other grounds.

Whatever I say now onwards is towards the interest of better and sensible film-making - and I’ll say it as many times you want me to - IT’S A BETTER MOVIE than the regular potboilers which comes every Friday - please see it once.

Anyway, I chose to opine that many of my friends here on Mouthshut have already seen the movie so I’d rather concentrate on the major aspects that I’d like to highlight.

Plot - The story is not more than a 15 minute read - so the director has been too courageous or too livid - when he chose to convert that into a full-length film. There has been gaps in the plot - which the director may have willingly kept intact.

Screenplay - It has been a very decent screenplay - although on some occasions it appears too flashy. Furthermore - it deviates from the story-telling efforts and rests more on the screen magic exuded by Anil & Rani.

Music - Was there any need of songs - I really doubt that. I’ve a feeling that it kind of releases the audience from the tension which has been built by the director. Knowing the directorial capabilities of Sudhir Mishra - it’s very sad that he, too, gives away the aesthetics of making a movie - by succumbing to marketability vibes.

Performance - Anil Kapoor has once again proved that he still delivers better meat than most of the next generation nincompoofs!! Rani - one feels that she is surpassing helrself by every next performance - I’d wait to see a director who unearths the full talent of hers - what we’re seeing is just short glimpses. Sayaji, Monisha and all others do fair justice to their roles - except one. ’’Salesman Ramlal’’ - has lost his golden touch of acting in the crowds of ’’Tere Naam etc.’’ - it seems so. Satish insults the huge potential of his - by giving not-so-good a performance.

Direction - Finally, I’d like to reiterate, Mr. Mishra - you’d lost it. Where’s the sense of detailing as in Dharavi, where’s the ability to get the audience on the edge - as in Is raat Ki subha Nahi? Most important for a director - why do you need to patronize the moneymaking interests and sacrifice the aesthetics? We expect the intelligent, meticulous story-teller - the next time we see you, Sir.
