Out of the Ashes

The chain owes much of its success to the six-dollar burger. Without it, few Americans would still eat there, being just another burger joint. Among fast food burgers it remains a tasty, protein-rich lunch item, especially enhanced with things like grilled onions or mushrooms.

From a business standpoint, Carl’s Jr. had nothing to distinguish itself from the myriad of cheap fast food places; I worked at one briefly in high school as part of a job-internship showing us different careers for a week and promptly vowed never to eat there. The meat, if it could be called that, was orange by the time they had mixed in all the preservatives and unnatural flavors, and then the brown food dye had to be added so it looked like beef.

I am well aware that American’s like their burgers. we do. In-N-Out Burger, for instance, makes a killing just by having four menu items: burgers fries, drinks and shakes. However, over the last ten years most fast-food types have wanted something a little better, even though they did not know it. MacDonald’s started the trend by introducing a new sandwich out of the blue: the chicken grilled onion flat bread sandwich. It was warm, fresh and tastier than anything else on the menu and was an instant hit. They’d sell out of them every day by 2pm or so with clamors for more. The problem was once the public got the taste for better food they wanted more of the same. The other items on MacDonald’s menu were being flagrantly ignored so they pulled the flat bread and consequently have been less popular since. Other joints stepped in, like Jack in the Box offering the sourdough jack burger and other varied, tasty items.

Carl’s Jr. finally woke up and began running promo ads for this giant, gorgeous-looking burger that would cost six dollars in a restaurant. but one could get it at their place for about four. After while I got over my pre-determined loathing of the chain and ordered one. It was a good as it looked, which was a first in my experience with fast-food hamburgers. it was also twice as big as anything MacDonald’s had to offer, in terms of meat.

We seldom eat out, so when we do we want to go to a place serving quality food. For fast food burgers, Carl’s junior’s six-dollar burger is worth the money.
