Cash was a movie most of the movie buffs (like me!) were eagerly waiting for! The promos were exciting and the music and songs (esp the title song) had become the rage of the season! In short, there were a lot of expectations riding on Cash. But unfortunately, Cash disappoints and fails to meet up the expectations. The reason? Poor script and weak direction by Anubhav Sinha.
The story of the movie: The movie is set in Cape Town, South Africa. Karan (Ajay Devgan) is an ace con artist married to Shanaya (Shamita Shetty) who was the Head of Security. Shanaya had no idea about Karan’s illegal activities. Karan then hires top-notch robbers Esha Deol (Puja), Lucky (Ritesh Deshmukh) and Danny (Zayed Khan) in order to steal 3 highly precious, each of 200 carats! But Angad (Suneil Shetty) an Underworld Don was also after it and so was Shanaya who wanted to protect the diamonds and sent it back to India. What will happen next?
Cash begins on an interesting note and this interest continues for a while. But as the story goes forward and each of the characters is introduced, the interest level comes down. What results is confusion. And the culprit is Director Anubhav Sinha. He fails to give a proper and just direction to the movie. He messes up with the complicated story and what results is as I said earlier, confusion!
However, the well-written story saves the movie! The story, though complicated, as good amount of interesting twists and turns which succeeds in keeping alive the interest of the viewers in the second half.
There are 2 unique things used in the movie. First of all, the action sequences (Antony Stone) is mind-blowing and never before seen in Bollywood! And secondly, the animation! The live scenes suddenly turn into animated scenes, which makes a unique experience! It is because of these two interesting things that I will recommend this movie to you!
Ajay Devgan does quite different job this time! He looks cool and he gives a great performance, which perfectly suited his character. Suniel Shetty plays a role which he have played before too and because of this his performance, though nice, doesn’t satisfy.
Zayed Khan looks cool as usual and does a confident job. He gives a fantastic performance. He does a very good job in the second half in a scene in which he is atop a speeding car. Good job, Zayed!
Ritesh Deshmukh was rocking! His new look is supercool and his performance just excellent and perfect. The screen lives up when he enters the scene! This is one of the best performances of Ritesh’s career. Splendid!
Now to the actresses, starting with Shamita Shetty. It was good to see her on screen after a long time. She does complete justice to her character. Her entry was fantastic! Dia Mirza’s performance was applauding. Her performance gets better in the second half. She was last seen in Shootout At Lokhandwala, wherein also she did a great job.
Esha Deol was the scene-stealer! She satisfies with her performance as the action girl. Right from the first scene till the climax, her performance was 100% perfect. She does complete justice to her character by getting into the skin of it. Post-Dhoom, she has become a better actress and giving brilliant performances (Kaal, Dus, Pyare Mohan, Ankahee, Just Married etc). This was one of the best performances of her career. It is a performance she should be proud of! Good work, Esha, Keep It Up!
Vishal-Shekhar’s music is as usual excellent. The duo has always given the finest music and in Cash too, they again do a great job by their funky and excellent music. Each song is nice but the two songs, which stand out, are the title track and ‘Reham Kare’. ‘Mind-Blowing Mahiya’ was superb but it was added unnecessarily in the film.
Ranjit Barot’s background score does an excellent job, very much like Salim-Sullaiman. Well done! Ravi Walia’s cinematography was breathtaking and quite Hollywoodish. The lensman brilliantly captures the visuals of in and around Cape Town. Antony Stone’s action was outstanding and never before seen in Bollywood. He does a better job than Allan Amin. Hats off to you, Mr Stone!
Yash-Vinay has written a nice story, though it has some flaws and glitches. As said earlier, Anubhav Sinha disappoints this time as a director. In Dus too, his direction was weak. Because of his weak direction, the movie looses its enjoyment. One advice to this guy-if you want to make a film like Dus and Cash again, you better brush up your direction skills. Otherwise no one will turn up to watch your movie.
Some of the best scenes of the movie:
The title track in the beginning
The animation scene in the beginning which describes how the diamond was discovered
Shamita Shetty and Dia Mirza’s entry
Suniel Shetty’s entrty
The scene where Ritesh steals the painting and cops chase him
The chase and action sequence just before the intermission point
The scene where Ritesh escapes from the club
The scene where Zayed is atop Esha’s car
The climax
On the whole, Cash is a nice entertainer but unfortunately it disappoints and doesn’t meet up all expectations due to its weak script and poor direction. However, it has good story, energetic performances, mind-blowing action, cool music, and interesting animation sequences which saves the movie. It has not taken a good start at the ticket window, but I think it should be watched at least once.
