This is one of Edgar Allen Poe’s best short stories. I love his mysterious writing style and this story definetly proves what a great mystery writer he is.
About the author:
Edgar allen Poe was born in Boston on Jan 18, 1809. Both of his parents died when he was three years old and he was adopted by John Allen of Richmond VA. He went to England to study for 5 years. But, he ran up gambling debts that the Allens refused to pay. So, he enlisted in the army, but was soon dismissed for disobidence. He then moved with his aunt in Baltimore where he married his 14 year old cousin- Virginia. The wrote and published horrifying tales and is considered to have developed the ‘detective stories’. He died in 1849 from a congestion of the brain.
Story:
The “Cast of Amontillado” begins in a very unliky place- a carnival in Italy. The character Montressor, we are told, wants to revenge Fortunato. When Montressor meets Fortunato, the man is very drunk and it is easy for Montressor to get him in trap he has set for him. He asks Fortunato if he could come and taste a little bit of the Amontillado (a dry sherry) and make sure it is an origional. Montressor leads Fortunato to his underground valut where he has stored the wine. From then, the story gets very mysterious and the reader can’t wait to find out what is going to happen. The characters have ironic conversations and their dialogues add to the haunting felling of the tale. The end is also very shocking.
I like all of this stories and poems and I think he is on of the best mystery writers of all.
