As far as movies go, the usual action packed set pieces such as Die Hard or any ‘Cop/FBI Vs Terrorists’ film genre, can get a little tiresome. So we want a new type of film. This film by someone called Zemeckis, seems to have a relationship with old cartoons where a character is stuck on a tiny island. Now I’m not going to give away the plot but it seems very basic. But not presented basically at all. Tom Hanks plays a delivery instructor (Chuck Noland) working for FedEx, and the beginning of the film seems a little odd for a film where a person is to be on and island. But it blends straight into the action, brilliantly and effectively. And this action piece had to be one of the best and terrifying points of the whole film. Afterwards you get a sense of the raw power of nature, and seeing what being alone is all about. After all the few scenes where Tom is trying to feed himself on the rock solid coconuts, the film start to fade. Instead of being interesting and exciting if fall down to boringness, although that would be when the Tom is…cough, rescued. Most of the middle area of the film is good, although I can see the director was running out of ideas, as storms and injuries fill the time effectively. Suicidal tendencies set into the mind of the instructor, as he almost committed suicide. One thing, which seemed a little ‘Jumanji’, was the fact they added 4 years on to the story, which means we miss out on the middle bits when the man is on the island, such as his suicidal thought which I mentioned before. Entering the last 20 minutes sees the worst bit of the film, as the Drama genre sets into place, as the story continues a relationship, which ended with the missing man. But it is interest to see what he makes of modern life, which he misses.
The only thing is a downer is the lack of speech, although Chuck talks to a Wilson football, called Mr. Wilson, and this sees another loss, that being Mr. Wilson.
