Yash Raj Films’s respect had gone down, as their last two movies were unsuccessful (Jhoom Barabar Jhoom and Tara Rum Pum). But now they have bounced back with Chak De! India, which is highly captivating, engrossing and a must watch!
The story of the movie: Kabir Khan (Shahrukh Khan) is selected as the new Hockey coach for National Women’s Hockey Team of India. He was quite infamous as he was kicked out of the Hockey Team 7 years ago, as he was believed to have done match fixing. As a coach, his motive was to make the women’s team win the world cup and also to gain his lost respect. When he gets introduced to his team of 16 girls, he finds that they were all imperfect. They were rivalries between players and all played for them, not for the country or for the team. Kabir perfected them and made them capable for playing in the Women’s Hockey World Cup. But will this team of 16 girls be able to win the world cup? Will Kabir be able to gain his respect back?
Chak De! India’s story is ordinary, but what makes the movie special is the screenplay (by Jaideep Sahni) and the direction (by Shimit Amin). Both these makes the movie highly engrossing and gripping. And worth mentioning is Shahrukh Khan’s performance, which is like the soul of the film.
The movie keeps one engrossed right from the first scene. But the highpoint of the movie begins when Shahrukh returns back as a coach 7 years later. The scenes where Shahrukh is giving a strict and though practice to the team was fantastic. The intermission point was quite exciting.
The enjoyment and excitement also remains in the second half, when the team goes to play the World Cup. However, the highpoint of the movie was the last 25 minutes of the movie and the climax, which was excellent.
The movie gets high points because it gives the knowledge of hockey which most of Indians do not know. We have always given patronage to Cricket. This movie glorifies hockey and evokes the sportsman spirit in all the youngsters. There is a possibility that hockey may soon become popular. So next time if you see some kiddies in your area playing hockey, then don’t get shocked! It’s just the effect of this movie!!
The movie rests on the performance of Shahrukh Khan, the Baadshah of Bollywood! He acts exactly like a coach behaves in real life with the players. If you have ever gone into some sports coaching class, you’ll totally agree with me. SRK totally got into the skin of the character. Last time he gave a perfect performance in Don and this time he gives an equally good performance. With this master performance, he proves that he is still the best! SRK bhai, I am waiting for your Om Shanti Om and Dulha Mil Gaya (SRK’s forthcoming flicks in this year)!
Out of the 16 girls in the movie, there are some, which register a strong impact. Sagarika Ghatge who played the role of Preeti Sabarwal, gives a superb performance. Shilpa Shukla who was Bindiya Naik in the movie gives a top-notch performance. Chitrashi Rawat who played Komal Chautala in the movie was perfect. Tanya Abrol as Balbir Kaur performed as her character demanded. Vidya Malvade (who played Vidya Sharma) is a top model but in the movie she hardly has screen-presence.
Anjan Srivastav gives a fantastic performance. Pratima Kazmi was good. Others give a nice performance.
Salim-Sulaiman’s music was perfect. There are few songs in the movie, but the best one was the title track. The duo has also given the background score in the movie, which was terrific.
Sudeep Chatterjee’s cinematography was amazing. Because of his outstanding cinematography it seemed that I was watching some match on a sports channel. Manas Chaudhary and Ali Merchant’s sound design was top-notch.
Special mention should be made of Jaideep Sahni. Jaideep had worked in many acclaimed films like Jungle, Company, Bunty Aur Babli, Khosla Ka Ghosla etc as dialogue writer, screenplay writer, story writer etc. In each of these movies he has done some highly creative work (He got the award of Filmfare Best Screenplay Award for Khosla Ka Ghosla). In Chak De! India, Jaideep has written the story, screenplay, dialogues and https://lyrics. And again, he has done outstanding job, especially in the screenplay. It was really very difficult to write the screenplay for this movie but Jaideep wrote the screenplay, which was effective and made the movie captivating. His dialogues were also sharp. Excellent work, Mr Jaideep! Keep It Up!
Shimit Amin (who had earlier made Ab Tak Chappan which was also worth 5 stars) gives a perfect and thrilling direction to this movie. He succeeds in keeping the interest alive in the viewers. He does a better job in the climax. He is surely going to get the nomination of Best Director in the awards! He deserves it!!

On the whole, Chak De! India is a mind-blowing movie and one of the finest to come out of the Yash Raj Films. The entire cast and crew has done a great work in the movie. It evokes sportsman spirit in each one of us (especially the youngsters). Missing this movie is like a crime. So go to your nearest theatre and catch this movie-it should not be missed!
