Chameli – The real test of acting

That?s because there was not much otherwise in the movie except for the dialogues between Kareena and Bose. And, I feel, both have passed in flying colors.

The story of the movie revolves around an unintended encounter between a pros and a well placed executive. The situation was peculiar because it doesn?t happen in real life. Normally, when two individuals from different strata?s of society meet they either mean business or meet under the compulsion of some artificial motives (part of life). Here, in the movie, situation was different, the reason being equally desperate situation of both the parties and indifferent attitude towards each other. And, in this situation, the two actors had to accomplish a difficult, and uncommon, task of subtly falling in love (obviously through acting). And they both did it quite well. Let?s see what exactly was the challenge?

The first challenge was for Kareena to act totally against her perceived glamorous image. To be very frank, I found her very ugly in the movie, and that?s what was expected too, and probably intended too. After this movie, my rating for Kareena?s beauty has fallen by a notch or two, but rating for her acting has risen by good number of notches. Having successfully shed her image, she boldly accepted the opportunity. In the movie, there were sequences where she had to show varied emotions. For example, feeling inwardly proud at being given unexpected respect by a decent guy, and she did it very well while maintaining her outwardly rash attitude. This can be observed in the sequences in the police station. Yet, another example is that of diverting her vulnerability to unwanted customers under disguise of artificial emotions. Again a splendid job done!

The second challenge was for Bose. The challenge in itself was presence of Kareena. Let?s be very frank, nobody went to watch this movie for Bose, and he would have known this fact very well in advance. In such a situation, leaving a mark for him is in itself a big accomplishment. And, actually, his acting was more natural. There were not as many variations in his role, but then he had to play his part well enough to substantiate the occurrence of any kind of relationship with a pros. He was in a state of misery himself before meeting the pros, and he had to substantiate his coming out of his state, entirely due to this meeting, and above all falling in love too! To make this look natural is no mean act. At the end of the movie, his falling in love with the pros didn?t look unnatural to me at least. And, this was in spite of weak links in the story.

The Movie Overall

The movie overall is not that attractive, it becomes boring at many times. Songs are good. Choreography in the song ?Sajna Ve? is remarkable. That song is also the best of the lot. Other characters in the movie have also done well. Direction is good. But, the story is not that well written. There were many very unnatural happenings in the story, the claims to reality are not that true. Meeting and falling in love with a pros is fine, but a guy dying to marry a eunuch?!! It?s too much.

The word of advice

Though it?s too late to give advice, but there is no harm in watching this movie even now, if you have not done it up till now. Anyways, there are not many good movies around.
