The only thing that is constant in life is,CHANGE

Changes is a story of two people, Dr. Peter Hallam, a heart surgeon and Melaine Adams, a television newscaster in New York. On the outside they had demanding careers, Peter fighting time, conquering odds beyond hope, Mel the ultimate professional, covering the biggest stories but inside they were lonely. But one day they meet, fall in love and everything CHANGES.

Seems like a typical ’’boy meets girl’’ kind of story , but what sets it apart is that the hero and the heroine have kids of their own and story does not end in Peter getting married to Mel but how they have to make CHANGES to be together after marriage. Added to it is the realistic description of the profession of a surgeon and a television newscaster. The odds that a surgeon has to fight every day are tremendous. Quoting from book ’’There were no guarantees in this business. There were never sure wins, only sure losses. It was a tough thing to live with, day by day’’. I admire those who take this profession and also admired (along with Mel) Dr.Peter also.

I had read this book first some years back, when I had just started working. But when I read this book now I enjoyed it more. It painted a realistic picture of a career woman, the dilemma she faces. Quoting Peter from book ’’You have five children now, and a job, and a bigger house to run, and me. Just how much can you expect of yourself Mel?’’ ’’More, I guess’’, she said’. Running a house, raising children, looking after a husband is a full-time job with no ’’THANKS’’, no holidays, no breaks and if you top it with career well. How one aches for the support, encouragement, appreication especially from husband and . Quoting Mel ’She looked sadly at him. ’’I’ve changed my whole life for you in the pat six months, give up my job, my home, my independence. I have a job out here which may or may not work out, but is omething of a step down for me, and working with a real sonofabitch. You don’t seem to appreciate any of that. And for you, everything is status quo. Your kids still have their own rooms, own house, pictures of their mom everywhere, their housekeeper, their dad. The only inconvenience is that now they have to put up with me. Well, if any of you expect me to stick around, maybe you’d all better start thinking, about what changes you’re going to make’’’ I am not a feminist but I sincerely request the men who are reading this to think, A woman has her needs too and no one give a damn of them attimes not even the woman herself. She is busy thinking about ’’what her husband wants, he expects or what makes him comfortable or what kids needs.’’ Quoting ’’They(the men) want a woman to love them with her whole heart and soul but they keep an important piece to themselves’’. Is it true? I somehow agree.

Let me tell you about how beautifully Danielle Steele has captured the feelings of being in love. And this is not the ’’love at first sight’’ or the ’’puppy love’’ when you love the feeling of being in love, it is about love which ahppends to people who are well-settled in profession, who have lots respect for other person. Quoting ’ ’’You know, I could sit here and talk to you all night’. He was still amazed at the range of conflicting emotions her felt for her, excitement, attraction, respect, trust, fear, distance and closeness all at once. But whatever it was, he couldn’t seem to get enough of it. The presence of Mel Adams in his life was apprately addictive. He was hooked, and he didn’t know what to do about it. ’’I feel the same way and the funny think is that we hardly know each other, and I feel as though I’ve known you for years’’ She had never enjoyed talking to anyone as much, and that still frightened her a little when she allowed herself to think of it’ They led separate lives, in separate worlds, in cities three thousand miles apart. They thought that ’’that was just the way things were and none would change’’, but then don’t we believe ’’That love conquers all’’. And in their case also it did.

Danielle, the author is a writer of extraordianry scope. She has set her various novels all over the world, from China to New York to San Fransico, in time frames spanning 1860 to present. She has recieved critical acclaim for her elaborate plots and meticoulous research, and has brought vivdly to life a broad range of very different characters. I have liked her ’’Daddy’’, ’’Family Album’’, ’’Zoya’’, ’’Fine Things’’.
