Aao Bachhon Tumhe Dikhaye Jhanki Hindustan Ki

There was a time when going to a film was thought tacky. My grandmother would say, going to a film meant giving money to the devil.Still it was a family outing. The more popular films were mythologicals.Romantic films were an absolute no-no.However after independence things changed.A new generation emerged that wanted to see the world. They took their spouses to the cinema.

They naturally preferred Dilip Kumar-Vyjantimala.Then came the swinging sixties.Colour films became a staple. With the advent of Hippies, the Beatles, the indian cinegoer loved to go to Paris, to Tokyo and other destinations. With a more broad-minded audience a lot of bolder films were made(eg Dhool Ka Phool). In the seventies, with political turmoil, the films were about heroes who could fight the system. In the year 1977, working class hero Amitabh had seven golden jubilees a record to beat all others. The eighties which were stable and prosperous saw the success of family dramas.More and more people from all sections came to the theatre. The nineties saw patriotic films of another kind.Films that celebrated and lionized india.Almost everybody now came to the theatre to watch films. The trend continues.

All our films have over the years glorified our culture and thats how I believe it should be.
