Photonics is a pretty new field. Im sure, 90% of you dont know what it is. So read on
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Light, the most spectacular agent of nature, has continuously initiated us into a state of awe, respect and admiration for centuries. For centuries light has continuously puzzled scientists and philosophers all over the world. Some considered it as a bunch of rays, others waves, still others some element. It was not until the last century that mankind was able to discover the secret behind light.
Light is a form of energy and if properly harnessed, it can cover a very big part of the energy needs of the world. Light, as such, has not been paid much importance till now. But, now this attitude is changing. Light is being put to use in various industries including the much-hyped biotechnology and information technology. This is where Photonics come into play.
WHAT IS PHOTONICS?
Photonics is the technology of generating and harnessing light energy, putting it to use in different fields. Photonic science includes light emission, amplification etc. It also deals with the instruments required such as laser guns, optical fibers, optometrical instruments etc. Photonics is widely used in the sphere of information technology and telecommunications. Optical fibers under sea and earth, military applications and various research industries need Photonic engineers. Photonics is also put to use in biotechnology, microbiology, medicinal sciences, surgery and life sciences.
WHAT IT TAKES
To be an engineer or scientist in this field, one needs to have high creativity, good aptitude in science especially in physics, good reasoning abilities and a zest for research.
Since this field is still in a developing stage, aptitude for research is a must. There is a global demand for skilled people with Photonics training. But, to fulfill this demand, bright and hardworking students has to be initiated into this field.
