Yes, I know this is an old album... but on a recent visit to Planet M, I saw a copy on the Special Offers shelf and decided to pick one up. Given the sheer dearth of good music at the moment, this turned out to be a really good bet.
Melodically, the songs are excellent, made better by very good vocals. Hans Raj Hans uses his voice to the best of his ability and makes each song come alive. His ability to add nuances to the way he sings, gives each piece a special kind of execution. The music is upbeat and well-orchestrated.
In particular, the songs to watch out for are Chorni (the title track), Dil Chori Sada, Chuni Mal Mal Di and the soft and heart-rending Kithe Koi Ronda Hovega.
The important things to focus on while listening to this album are the vocals, in particular the way HRH has used his voice depending on the needs of the song; the musical backing, and in some cases, the lyrics (by Anand Raj Anand).
All in all, I would recommend this album to those who:
(a) Like Punjabi folk songs
(b) Enjoy good melodies, sung well
(c) Like earthy music untainted by modern electronic sounds
(d) Appreciate the deceptive simplicity of folk music
(e) Seek an acoustic feel in their music
Recommendation: Buy it. It is a good addition to your collection.
