A Priyadarshan movie always has its own charms for me. Ever since I saw Virasat and Hera Pheri, I’ve been hooked on to his narrative style of story telling…
Unfortunately, I believe that he has not equaled the mastery he displayed in the above 2 movies in any of his later films. The latest disaster to be added to the growing list of fiascos is ‘Chup Chup Ke’.
Chup Chup Ke is about a guy, Shahid Kapoor, who is so overloaded with debts that he sees no way out of his trouble other than to commit suicide. However, fate intervenes and he is saved by fishing net! The owner of the fishing boat, Paresh Rawal, himself is steeped in debt… How the two manage to save their skins (not together, of course) while managing to land in further trouble forms the rest of the story.
Though the first half of the movie is fairly decent and has some pretty good comedy & acting, the second half falls completely flat on its face. It almost seems like at one point, the director did not know how to end the story and just tried to tie all the knots together!
The movie is worth it only for the few scenes of terrific chemistry between Shahid and Kareena. I said few scenes bcoz they hardly have much to do together. Their performance is quite good though, especially that of Kareena who has a tough role to essay. She has communicated with her eyes beautifully in the movie. Rajpal Yadav though has given one of his best performances in this movie. His acting had seemed a bit repetitive lately, but in this movie, he has outclassed even a seasoned comic genius such as Paresh Rawal.
The funniest (and weirdest) scene in the movie – Watching Sushma Reddy in the second half in a widow’s garb, compete with white saree and full-sleeved old-lady-style blouse! Oh Lord, if there ever was an award to be given for mischaracterization, it has to be this. Sushma, if you are reading my review, please take my advice – I think u are pretty, but u are not made for Indian characterizations! Stick to modeling or advertisements and your fans will stick with you!
Watch it (at your own risk)! If you aren’t a Shahid/Kareena/Paresh/Rajpal/Priyadarshan fan, you are better off watching Hera Pheri one more time!!!
