Hide and seek

Marriages were made in heaven. Marriages were made in the cradle, marriages were made stealthily by eloping!!

Again the 70’s saw an exodus of social message films that were laced with comic sense for SENSE **to sink in.

The golden pair of Hrishida and Sippy paired again and then churned another blockbuster, Chupke Chupke, with a multi star cast and actors of the calibre of Om Prakash, Asrani, BIg B, Dharam Paaji and of course Jaya Bhaduri (Bachchan) with the ever smiling, dimpled Sharmila Tagore!!

That my friends is a cast to die for!!

*The Plot

Prof. Parimal Tripathi, Dharmendra, ** marries his college sweetheart, Sulekha, Shermila Tagore, and is blissfully happy with her. Prof. Sukumar Sinha, Amitabh Bachchan, a close friend of Parimal is a lecturer of English Literature alongwith Parimal who is a lecturer of Botany. Sulekha is always bragging about he beloved jijaji Raghvendra Sharma, Om Prakash, as being the smartest man around and nobody can fool him. Parimal along with Sukumar decide to end this bragging once and for all and lure SUlekha into agreeing to a plan. Since Raghav is not aware of Parimal and hasnt seen him and he is in need of a shuddh Hindi speaking driver, Parimal drives this opportunity and sends Sulekha promptly to her jija’s house...

*This is the premise of the plot on which a rib tickling, fresh and a very bubbly comedy greets you with a laugh-a-minute promise and sterling performnaces from the cast!!

Some rib tickling instances!!

  1. Parimal enters the Sharma household as the driver. As he is introduced to Raghav he gives a test of his ability and literally zooms, front andd reverse and takes some outrageous turns in front of Raghav. Raghav is just short of getting a heart attack and Om Prakash is at his expressions best!! After that when Parimal checks the car, he comes up to Raghav and suggests, "Saheb, hum zara hast pranchaln kar aate hain!!"..... indicating washing of hands!!.....

  2. Sukumar (Amitabh) is now teaching the enamoured, Vasudha, Jaya Bhaduri, the finer things of Botany as he has entered Raghav’s household as Parimal and Sulekha’s husband!! So he starts teaching Vasudha, "Corolla?? What is corolla??.... You see, corolla is a form of karela and karela is a form of corolla..... and calyx ..... ", (sputters) and starts making advances in English literature. Talks about Shakespeare and Vasudha is stunned, **"Sir, aap mujhe Botany padha rahein hain yaa Literature???".....

3. When parimal has sufficiently launched himself onto Raghav’s lap, he wants to learn english too.. so begins the famous dialogue, "Saheb (witha book in hand), yeh Do .. Do (pronounced as Du) hota hai, aur Go ... Go (pronounced go) .... yeh kasie?? Do Du hai to Go GU kyon nahin ho sakta**???.... Bheja fry moments for Raghav and family.....

I can really go on and on... The incident when a thief lands in the house and the mayhem that is caused in mistaken identity.... The deliberate ploy of Sulekha and Parimal as dirver to confuse Raghav and David (Raghav’s friend) to make them believe that they are having an affair... its amazingly humorous...

The encounters between PK (Asrani)who is after Vasudha and Sukumar who has fallen in love with her... With Asrani and his expressions.... I can guarantee you a stomach ache!!

All in all this was one film that really tickled your funny bone and made you clutch your sides to stop them from splitting....

Hrishida had churned and spun his MAGIC again!! Different star cast, different story and an amazing fit for the actors to perform. Again, please understand that each and every character was etched. All characters established properly and yet, there were no loose ends, no hurrying the climax... Everything was perfect!! The screenplay, the intermingling of personalities, the shuddh hindi dialogues, the bumbling literature professor trying to teach botany.... all hilarious and delightful in its venture!!

Dharmendra, the hunk of yesteryears as professor of Botany and driver speaking shuddh hindi is simply amazing... bahut khub!! You can imagine his handsome face playing pranks and mischief on Sharmila and Om Prakash... **funny and rib tickling.. difficult for a he man to play comedy, Paaji did it with amazing ease!! The script was such...

Amitabh, as the **gangly, awkward Literature teaching Botany, Parimal is superb!! He proved himslef as an actor and a great timer of comedy as well!!

Sharmila, is bautiful and has the grace and sensousness of a lovely lady who knows what she is doing! Jaya Bhaduri, as bubbly, eager to learn Botany student, simply fantastic. Om Prakash, as the smart, know-it-all jiju, is **smashing HIT!

S D Burman..... What do you say about a man as talented as him....?? Speechless... Songs like, Sa re ga ma... ma sa re ga.... ga sa re ma... ma ga re sa.... (Duet), Ab ke sajan sawan mein, aag lagegi badan mein, Chupke chupke, chal di purvaiyya.... simply superb and unforgettable!!

All in all, another feather in Hrishida’s camp and 1975 saw a smash hit!! This is a collectors classic, cannot have any remake on this and after that only Gulzaarsaab, who has written the screenplay and dialogues of this film, was able to do some mistaken identity justice with his Angoor!! Watch and enjoyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy......
