Maybe I am reviewing this book by Tom Clancy very late in the day but I feel that it still merits a review.A very well written book, which was later adapted for the big screen. It was a success, both in the book version as well the screen version. The movie had Harrison Ford as Jack Ryan, the protagonist of the movie.
It is all about one of the friends of the US President who is murdered aboard a yacht alongwith his family. The Prez orders a probe into the death of his friend and what promises to be routine probe turns out into a something very dirty.DRUGS.It is then that the Prez in a fit of rage takes the law into his hands and orders a private strike against the drug cartels in Medellin, Columbia.
For this mission are recruited a handful of soldiers whose tags are taken away because this mission might turn out to be embarassing for the American Government. These poor guys are set loose behind enemy territory and then given up for dead.Which is when Jack Ryan steps in.He picks up cudgels on behalf of the soldiers left behind enemy lines. And then with the help of American Democratic principles he brings the Prez to book.
This is all about the use and abuse of power. How it can affect the people who wield it.Power indeed is a brutal weapon when used in a merciless manner.Tom Clancys books are usually around 900 pages long.Folks get scared seeing the size of his books, especially in todays times when people lead a busy lifestyle, no one has the time to read a 900 page book. But take my word for it.His books are racy and well paced. There is no nonsensical descriptions over here. You get a lot of knowledge about how things work, both political and technical. It has to do with Clancys career with the US Navy.I recommend this book to those who relish a good adventure and this is thought provoking fiction at its best.
