For all the Short story lovers I would suggest the name of Saddat Hassan Manto. he was surely one of the best short story writers of the 20 century..
Most of his short stories known in India are written on the trauma of partition which had on him and others at that time. his stories on partition had a unbiased view among them is Toba Tek Singh. very few people know that Mr manto was a script writer in Hindi film industry before he reluctantly left for Pakistan in 1947.
Saddat Hassan Manto faced many hardships in the New country he was tried by courts for writing Story called Thanda Gosht ( Cold Meat) which was alledged to be obscene. He was aquitted of all charges but he was an Alchoholic and finally succumed to his weakness at a early age.
In fact he was very close to our late Dadamuni (Ashok Kumar). Mr Manto’s first love was Bombay city though Mr Manto died in 1956 but some say he died the day he left Bombay. there are many short stories written by Saadat hassan manto and many of them are about Bombay and life in pre partition Bombay.
My Favorite among his writings is a book called " Stars from Another Sky" its based on Manto’s essays written on his life in Bombay film industry. ITs is an amazing book there are so many interesting stories about pre partition India, personal lives of film stars of that era and film Industry. if you are a short story lover don’t miss this one
