Dealing with Eve Teasing

Eve teasing is a serious form of cruelty against women. Some girls are affected by it so badly that they even take measures like suicide after being tortured mentally(and in some cases physically too). So how to deal with it?

First, accept it, that it exists. One of the negatives of being good looking is unwanted attention from the members of opposite sex.

  • Boys will stare at you.

  • Whistle when you pass them.

  • Follow you.

Even if girls do nothing to encourage them and do not dress in provocative clothes, then too it does not stop the eve-teasers from continuing their “work”.

Here are a few tips that I follow to deal with it and would advice the other girls to follow them too if they also face the same problem.

  • Simply ignore the grinning, staring and whistling.

  • Do not make eye contact with anyone.

  • Do not show that you are disturbed or anxious.

Eve-teasing till this phase is still manageable. But when guys start to follow you that can be a very dangerous situation. This what you should do if you are being followed.

  • Avoid deserted roads.

  • Join a group of passers-by.

  • Enter a shop.

  • If the person looks like a goonda mawali(dangerous), phone a friend or your parents from a booth or shop and wait till they come to pick you up.

Our safety is in our own hands. We cannot expect our police and our citizens to take care of us(even though it is their duty). In my opinion every girl should follow these safety rules.

  • Avoid being alone especially at night.

  • Do not go into deserted streets or service lanes.

  • Carry a mobile phone.

  • Do not wear costly jewels and accessories.

  • Carry a pepper spray in your purse.

Do not lock yourself up in your home because of these anti-social elements but just play safe. If someone bothers you too much, confide in your parents, brother, boyfriend or even lodge a police complaint.

Another part of eve teasing happens in offices, especially where male staff is in majority. If you have a good figure and a large bosom you may catch them often staring at your chest. Such a situation can be very embarrassing for you. I think there are only three ways to deal with it.

  • Do not wear revealing clothes to office.

  • Make a remark that you expect them to talk to your face and look at your face when you talk to them.

  • Find a job in a more women-friendly environment.

I hope the review would be of some use to the fellow girls.
