CuteFTP is a one of a number of programs that allows one to load content onto a personal website. It also doubles as a downloader program to download certain files from other people’s web space.
’’FTP’’ stands for File Transfer Protocol. Basically in a nutshell, FTPs are utilities that helps one transmit/recieve data. Most people that want to put up web sites have to use them to ’’talk’’ to their site.
CuteFTP is one of the more user friendly FTP programs out there, perhaps the most friendly. It has a ’’wizzard’’ to help walk you through the process. This wizzard is helpful up to a point, but not exactly super easy to navigate. I have tried other FTP programs and found that Cute is easier to navigate, but it is still not cut and dry easy in my humble opinion. You have to understand some complicated (to me it was anyway) termalogy. Having to know the ’’FTP host address’’ along with the ’’FTP user name’’ and ’’FTP site password’’ means you have to keep up with all the detail of your web site. Obtaining that web site is another matter (it involves getting a Domain name {URL of your own} and getting someone to host it {provide the space and space}) . That is a matter for another review in which several people have already written great articles.
Back to our CuteFTP program, the cost is the only major problem I have with this program. It is durn expensive at $40.00 USA dollars. I was hard pressed to pay that for it, but I have several web sites I needed to program and wanted an easy program to deal with daily. Cute is barely worth the $40.00 bucks to me, but that is only because of the amount of programing I needed to do. There is numerous free FTP programs at https://zdnet.com (in the download section) for those who are more technical adapted. Also there is a free 1 month trial version of Cute for you to try on zdnet.com... After you become some what more at ease with FTP programs, maybe you can use one of the free ones instead of shelling out big bucks for this one.
There is one other aspect of CuteFTP I noticed worthy of mention. It has a nice search program that you can use that locates files from other users of cuteFTP. You can use this program to download music, files, ect.. (though I have found it is limited in the rare music I like). You do have to be very careful on what you download off the internet of course, just because it says one thing does not mean some evil person has not altered it to something dangerous for your computer. A good anti-virus program that is updated daily is highly suggested if you wish to do this. I don’t trust anyone any more and have stop downloading stuff. I would rather buy the software, ect.. off ebay.com cheaply now than risk ruining my computer.
