A Great Gig in the Sky

A cult band of faceless brits carried the sounds of psychedelic rock from underground clubs of London to the rooms of ’’ordinary men’’ all over the world. The band was Pink Floyd and the monument that marked this stage in the rock history was their album : ’’Dark Side of the Moon’’(DSOTM). ’’Dark Side of the Moon’’ is more than an album, it’s an experience. It starts with sound of heartbeats that leads into simple lyrics - ’’Breathe, Breathe in the air, don’t be afraid to care’’. The whole album is lyrically so simple yet so deep. It’s central concept is ’’the human experience.’’ The brilliant lyrics explore madness (’’Brain Damage’’), war( ’’Us and Them’’), death (’’Great Gig in the Sky’’), aging (’’Time’’) and affluence (’’Money’’). Then the sound effects: The cash register before ’’Money, ’’ the clock before ’’Time, ’’ we are being taken on a trip in which all the tracks neatly flow into the next, punctuated by a consistently somber mood and usually soft, smooth vocals by Gilmour. Roger Waters kicks in at the end in ’’Brain Damage’’ and ’’Eclipse’’. Beautiful pieces of music, like Gilmour’s guitar in ’’Time’’, Dick Parry’s jazz saxophone in ’’Money’’ and Richard Wright’s beautiful piano in ’’US and Them, ’’, Clare Torry’s rangy vocals in ’’The Great Gig in the Sky’’, conglomerate to this experience. No wonder it stayed in Billboard charts for more than 4 years. In nutshell, ’’Dark Side of moon’’ is an undisputed every-home-should-have-one masterpiece. By the way, There is no dark side of the moon really, matter of fact it is all dark. Listen to it and you’ll know why!
