Old Delhi special

Zainul Abedin, whose grandfather opened this restaurant in 1913, has built a 4th dining house on this small compound to accommodate the 1, 000 people who come every day for his delicious ’fast food.’ The atmosphere is perfect for the location - just off a lane across from the south gate of the Jama Masjid. In one building, a man sits cross-legged creating naan (flat bread) in a tandoor; nearby, enormous cooking vessels simmer your meal over a low flame. The fastest-moving items are badam pasanda (boneless mutton cooked with yogurt and spices), mutton stew, and chicken or fish tandoori. No alcohol is served. The restaurant’s 2nd branch, known as Karim, works well if you don’t want to go all the way into Old Delhi or prefer a more upmarket setting, but the food just isn’t the same.
