Living with Diabetes

Diabetes is medically known as diabetes mellitus which is a group of diseases that affect the way your body uses blood sugar (glucose). This sugar is vital to your health because it’s your body’s main source of fuel. Normally, glucose goes into your cells because of the action of insulin which is a hormone secreted by your pancreas. Insulin acts like a key to unlock microscopic doors that allow glucose to go into your cells. But in diabetes mellitus, this process does the opposite.

Instead of being transported into your cells, glucose accumulates in your bloodstream and eventually is excreted in your urine. This usually occurs either because your body doesn’t produce enough insulin or because the cells don’t respond to insulin properly. More Americans have diabetes than ever before. The disease affects 16 million adults and children, yet close to a third of them may not know they have it. That’s because diabetes can develop gradually over many years, often with no symptoms. I have heard many people say diabetes is when someone eats too much sweets but that is not necessarily the case.  I have educated many people about diabetes.  I just found out that I am now a diabetic and with careful diet, it can be taken care of properly.  But not in all cases does a diet do it, some may need insulin or pills to control the diabetes.

For right now, I am on a special diet and exercises.  If you are ever diagnosed with diabetes please dont take it likely because it could cause complications such as coma, illness, and others. Word of advice, Always follow what your doctors suggests to you.  Thank you for reading. :-)
