Did you know that there was a condition that looks like a seizure, but is actually not? This conditions is called pseudoseizures.
A pseudoseizure is really a false seizure. The main difference between a true and a false seizure is the source. A true seizure happens when nerves in the brain misfire for no apparent reason. A pseuoseizure is a psychologic condition. Without thinking about it, the mind just decides to have a seizure. Even though a pseudoseizure looks very much like a real seizure, there are some physical differences between the two. This is very helpful in helping your doctor or medical professional make a diagnosis.
Some examples of the differences are:
(1) Some people who have false seizures stay conscious and even remember what happened during the event.
(2) They act with reason or purpose.
(3) Some even get violent.
Pseudosceizures are many times a psychologic way of coping. It is a way that the mind can cope with difficult situations. For these types of seizures the treatment will be much different than for a person with epilepsy. This is one of the main reasons why it is so important for your doctors to make a proper diagnosis.
Remember, this is a condition just like epilepsy and is every bit as important to treat. It is real! It does not mean that you have emotional problems or can not deal with stress. It is your brain shutting down. See a doctor if you suspect you may have this problem!
