Recently I had whiplash injury while driving and it was very painful for me. I couldnt bear the pain especially in nights and I was unable to sleep properly.
So I thought I would share my experience How I dealt with it.
First of all let us know what exactly it means;
Whiplash Injury is an injury to the neck which results from a sudden thrusting forwards and snapping back of the unsupported head. In medical terms, it is called hypertension-hyper flexion injury. Commonly it is called as Neck strain.
HOW IT IS CAUSED;
These are caused by damage to the muscle or the tendons or band of tissue that connect muscles to bones. Its symptoms involves pain and tightness in neck and your neck muscles would feel hard. There will be huge pain when you rock your head from side to side or backward and forward.
HOW TO TREAT IT;
The first step is to apply ice to your neck to reduce swelling and pain as soon as you can after the injury. Do it for 15 minutes every 3-4 hours for 2-3 days. You can wrap the ice in a thin towel or cloth to prevent injury to your soft and delicate skin.
Consult your family doctor or any other specialist and if they recommend you can use anti-inflammatory drugs like Ibuprofen which I used or Naproxen which will help in reducing pain and swelling. But do take them only when your doctor recommends.
Use a neck brace or collar to add support for 2-3 days. Dont use them for long as they can weaken your neck muscles.
If pain persists you can apply moist heat to your neck but do it after 2-3 days of icing it first. Use heat only when swelling is gone. you can use warm towel for this purpose.
I would also suggest the use of a gel named NISE gel which is very effective in reducing pain. I used it and it was very good. However it is not compulsory to use it.
So friends if you will stick to these tips you will feel less pain and you would get healed easily after 3-4 days. There is nothing to worry.
