Heights of TORTURE!

Delhi Heights is an attempt to portray the life of young professionals in the urban setting of Delhi, it depicts the ups and downs in the life of a newly married couple who have no time for each other as they are busy with their respective careers, it deals with a flirtatious husband and his wife and the problems they go through and there are several other parallel tracks involving young teenagers playing pranks etc. Unfortunately the script is extremely weak, it has not been explored in depth, and it also caters only to a certain niche audience which is the urban audience. The screenplay too is unconvincing and lacks appeal to captivate the audiences. On the whole Delhi Heights is below satisfactory.

Delhi Heights belongs to the realistic or social film genre and it has been directed by Anand Kumar. The screenplay has been done by Sanyukta Varma and the star cast includes Jimmy Shergill as Abi, Neha Dhupia as Suhana, Om Puri as Timmy Kohli,

Rohit Roy as Bobby, Simone Singh as Saima, Kamini as Ruby etc. The film revolves around the lives of several couples, teenagers etc who live in a complex called Delhi Heights.

Abi and Suhana are just few months into their marriage and already it seems like problems are threatening to tear them apart. Abi and Suhana live in Delhi Heights complex and work for rival advertising companies. They are both busy with their respective careers and hence do not get to spend a lot of time with each other. This is the first rift in their relationship and in the course of time many other rifts threaten to weaken their marriage. Abi and Suhana are also trying to get the same project for their own companies, Abi feels assured that he will get the deal but at the last moment Suhana bags the deal for her company. This further threatens their personal relationship as Abi feels that Suhana has got the deal through unfair means; he also gets possessive and does not trust his wife.

Another couple Bobby and Saima also live in the same complex and are friends with Abi and Suhana. Bobby is a compulsive flirt and Saima has been tolerating his philandering ways for a long time. Bobby even hits on Abi’s wife Suhana and soon his wife catches him with someone red-handed, she is upset and finally decides to leave him. But when Bobby has an accident, she decides to stay for a while and take care of him, this incident changes Bobby and his ways. There is also another middle aged couple Timmy and Ruby who are busy planning their daughter’s wedding. Will Abi and Suhana be able to work out their differences, will Bobby finally give up his flirtatious ways?

The script is weak as it fails to get the audiences involved in the lives of its protagonists. The execution by Anand Kumar too is not very competent as he fails to arouse that feeling of empathy with his characters. The problems between the couples seem very distant and unconvincing. Even the get togethers between the residents of the building is just an opportunity for song and dance. Also the theme of marital discord and misunderstanding no longer holds any novelty. Each parallel track is not co-ordinated with the other well. The film suffers due to a weak script and screenplay.

The film does try to portray a realistic story often seen in urban settings. However this reality is not portrayed in a convincing manner. Also the climax is again a predictable one and does not do much for the film. At times there seems to be severe continuity jerks too. Editing is just about average but there are several unwanted scenes that could have easily been edited. Cinematography is average but one does get to view a few good glimpses of Delhi and pleasing interiors. But unfortunately the culture and mannerisms of Delhi people does not come forth even through the protagonists. Music by Punjabi artiste Rabbi too is unsatisfactory and the only number that sounds good is ‘Tere Bin’. Dialogues are fare.

Jimmy Shergill delivers an average performance and Neha Dhupia too is convincing in her an act. Rohit Roy needs to still work on being realistic and not too over the top in films. Although Simone Singh is a good actress, her role leaves much to be desired. Om Puri is also wasted in the film. Overall Delhi Heights is a film that does not really make you identify with the Delhi urban life; instead it seems like a saga of marital discord between couples. The script is uninspiring and the screenplay too is unimaginative. Hence Delhi Heights does not offer anything new to viewers and is also below satisfactory.
