Hi Guys and gals. I bought a Dell Inspiron 640M yesterday. Well I ordered it on 1 Dec 2006 and I got it delivered on 4th jan 2007.
Coming to configuration:
My laptop is powered by Intel Core 2 duo T5500[1.66GHz, 2MB L2 Cache, 667MHz FSB] with 512MB of DDR2 SDRAM @ 533MHz.
14.1 inch wide screen.
DVD writer with dual layer write capabilities.
Bluetooth with audio support for wireless headphones, Wi-fi, 5 in 1 Memory card reader
Shock mounted 80GB SATA hard drive
Dell Media Direct 3.0
Windows XP Home edition
6 Cell 53Watt Hour battery
Dell Light Weight Nylon case

This laptop is a true perfomer. Got awesome power. I tested running antivirus program, downloading files from internet and playing music simultaneously and then opened a pdf file
, it opened smoothly. So a true perfomer for the money I paid.
Screen is bright and lively and is a widescreen with a resolution of 1280X800 pixels. Displays colors in depth. Opted for a 14.1 inch screen because its neither small like a 12.1 nor very big like a 17 or 15.
It weighs around 2.5KG, so no problem if you are a frequent traveller.
Got Bluetooth and wifi. So you can stay connected with wire less networks. Bluetooth is very cool and fast. Transferring files betwn mobile and laptop is a breeze.
Got a media card reader.
Touchpad is the very soft and got precise pointing and also the buttons wont make noise while operating. Got a horizontal and vertical scroller in touchpad.
Key board is big, infact keys are big and properly arranged.
The media direct 3.0 feature will let you play audio, video, view photos, make power point presentations without booting windows. A cool feature when you are travelling.
Speakers are loud and clear. They closely match with my Sony Ericsson w800i interms of clarity. No problem when you are watching DVD movies on the move.
I have not yet tested wi-fi.
Nylon case is light and can carry many many cd/dvd along with the laptop.
The laptop looks a bit thick compared to others but this is good considering the air flow that the laptop uses. So heating issues can be minimized.
I have not yet faced any heating issues with the laptop as other users described. I continously used for over 8 hours in my office.
I am not et all happy with Dell regarding the time they took to deliver the laptop. Also the sales agent was giving me false information about delivery.I got the laptop delivered after 34 days of ordering. They promised that the delivery would happen with in 2 to 3 weeks.
I spoke to customer service manager and complained about the things happened. After the conversation the manager offered me with a Dell 512MB memory key[Pen drive] as a compensation which I didnt ask with him. Well I told ok.
And I bought the laptop for Rs.47700, inclusive of all taxes.
I will keep updated about the laptop performance over time.
