The Dell Inspiron M531R Series ( 3558) ( starts at $229.99; $329 as tested) is a budget desktop-replacement laptop that will get the job done with no fuss—or frills—for a very reasonable price. Of course it is not a speed demon at this price, but its a better performer than much of the competition, and it offers a whole terabyte of storage along with all the ports youd expect. The touch screen is also sharp for an inexpensive system, and the laptop is more portable than the chunkier Inspiron 17 5000 Series Non-Touch. Thanks to these generational improvements and overall solid design, the Inspiron 15 3000 Series ( 3558) is our new Editors Choice for budget desktop-replacement laptops.
Design and Features
The Inspiron M531R is a basic-looking black plastic laptop, with few design choices that many shoppers could find objectionable. The lid and keyboard deck are covered in a dotted textured plastic that doesnt scream high-end and I dont personally like much, but I do think its preferable to an entire body of cheap, shiny plastic. Instead, only the edges of the laptop feature a glossy finish, which strikes me as a smart choice that gives the budget system a sharper look.
