The Dev in me! without a D

Dev D the modern interpretation of Devdas well all of us know that by now, and all about emotional atyachar. I was watching this movie and felt my life on screen without the booze etc part. The movie perfectly describes today’s dev and today’s youth.

I would also like to kick Taran Adarsh for rating this movie as 1 star and calling it another no smoking, believe me man who give these critics job! or are the only born to watch masala movies. Also please do not compare this movie with old devdas, expectations were set earlier. If you cannot connect to it, may be u were too perfect or haven’t fallen in love.

Why did I watch the movie?

Well for the emotional atyachar, and anurag kashyap’s direction. Also wanted to see the reality take on DPS MMS and BMW car case. For anurag kashyap after his brilliant scripts like Satya and shool why to miss this one.

*Cast and Plot:

Cast includes - *

Abhay Deol as Dev - done a brilliant job no more words can describe it.

Mahi Gill as Paro - perfectly did a role of punjabi girl(jattani) well she is from punjab though

Chunni - a pimp playing the dark role, pretty ok nothing to write home about.

Kalki Koechlin: Acted well as chanda but could have improved a bit.

Plot: The movie plot is different from traditional devdas its not all masala, but an art movie commercialized pretty well including both comedy anddrama. Movie is not set in Bengal as usual its in punjab, and its a lot more take on reality. Movie is episodic showing parts of each life and then combining them together almost like Pulp Fiction, which I feel was a brilliant concept to avoid getting bored or pouring too many characters on screen. Also musical narration has been done brilliantly. Also dev’s dad is not out and out rich, a reason has been shown in this movie that he owns a sugar mill.

Some people say movie is all about booze and sex, being today’s youth life for me was much more similar being a part of move on generation.Movie displays the reality of punjab pinds(villages), girls sleeping with boys in farms etc. That’s a hard reality and most people do not know about it. Also the DPS MMS case and BMW case brings movie closer to what happens with youth today mixing it well with traditional Devdas concept.

It also plays a joke on typical Indian male mentality about virginity and trusting other people. The differences you will notice that in this movie Dev’s dad want her to marry Paro but he does not, parents are shown liberal like today’s world. The movies starting is somewhat like OLLO showing the funny childhood of Dev’s Life.

Some parts of movie might be typical north Indian like Paro talking toher father in Punjabi, I watched the movie in Bangalore and I can hear people murmuring in kannada about it.

Movies another reality take was DPS MMS that happened around 3 years ago, it displays the reality about fun for people and tragedy for another, the trauma a person goes through, believe me you would not like in being her place, it has been directed and pictured amazingly.

The movie also shows dark side of Delhi nicely done by chunni "dilli mein bill maarlo, khaalo par paalo nahi";) also the crime, corruption(two cops taking bribe don’t miss that scene), and Eve Teasing. Also chunnis dialog "aur maalik bolo" is a typical delhi slang on phones.

The movie takes a saracasm on Bhansali’s devdas too, that movie was atorcher for me I did not watch it even half as SRK Was crying the wholetime, well; the sarcasm is the songs played along like dola re dola, and maar daala, Also SRKs poster outside an illegal bar displaying asSRK was there.

The only drag part in the movie was BMW hit and run incident case and abit after that till the time dev goes to streets with dogs, that’s a fun scene too, may be the drag was to show Dev’s realization. All the characters in the film perfectly fits today’s real life characters.

My favorite song in the movie is Nayan Tarse however the best picturised song is "Pardesi" awesomely done. Also remember the emerald group;). Well emotional atyachar goes without question.

Scene’s to remember in the movie:

Chanda talking to guy on phone and suddenly he asks to talk in tamiltotally came as a surprise on kind of fantasies people demand. Dev and Chunni doing shots in bar on the song pardesi. nPaaro going to studio for getting her photo developed and scanned - the clearsil joke:) Dev talking to the dog Dev’s childhood

A dramatic scene between lenni(chanda) and her father fighting and his father shooting himself. When dev breaks the glass after drinking in his hotel room, and chunni defenses with a pillow brilliant scene, no dialogues. Do not miss the paintings in Dev’s room, those are some nice one.

My criticism:

Seriously some people irritated so much in the cinema hall by reading everything aloud what they saw on screen even Adv. names, also laughing on intimate scenes which were followed by the drama. Well atrocious.

Audience Reaction:

Emotional Atyachar was silence break whistles, clap and noises. At jokes the whole hall was laughing. Some of my friends liked the movie every much and some said some masala is missing, well it was an art movie commercialized. I would say go for it, movie is bold and strictly for adults. I was able to connect with movie.

why to watch the movie:

For direction

For performances

For devdas in denims

For a take on todays reality

For a brilliantly adapted script

For the climax

Why not to watch:

If you are typical masala buff cannot stand devdas taking drugs and booze Cant stand initiate jokes. I would recommend the movie and would say go for it, go for it in shall, or on home theatre otherwise you would not enjoy the musical narration, the music is awesome. Well all I would conclude this movie is close to my heart close to me just like Dev without the D(drugsetc). Todays Dev is todays youth.
