Dhoom just about saved itself

Just watched one of the much awaited movies in recent times... Dhoom-2. No doubt, the movie will make a lot of money. Perhaps for the right reasons. But I would point out all those things despite which this movie becomes likeable.

Why do we need to have necessarily 5 or 6 songs in a Hindi movie? These songs almost managed to distract the viewers from wonderfully engrossing moments in the movie.

There were far too many slow-motion scenes in the movie. To the extent that, it seemed more of a collection of modelling profiles of various artists. Actors are central to the movie. But they are still parts of the whole. The whole should take precedence over the parts, at least in the director’s mind.

While some action sequences were absolutely wonderful, quite a few seemed a little unrealistic. May be because of the way they were conceived or may be simply because of the cinematography or editing. Won’t go deeper but you’ll notice when you watch the movie.

Also, there’s no need to show the hair flying every time an actor is seen for the first time in the movie. Even subdued and less made up appearances go down well with the audience.

Lastly, can we do away with the basketball context please. No need if we can’t show the sport convincingly.

Emotional scenes require more depth. Guess such histrionics require consideration of three different aspects:

  1. Context (script or storyline) in which the actors are shown

  2. The time that such scenes occupy in the movie

  3. Given the script, how well the actors have understood the required emotions

Let’s get down to the positives.

It’s Hrithik’s show. Undoubtedly! And he does justice to most of the things, whether stunts or acting.

Abhishek and Uday Chopra rendered themselves well.

Aishwarya is ravishing at time, but largely okay. She could have played her first conversation with Hrithik a little better.

The disguises and the contexts in which they are shown have been immaculately done. Kudos to all the make-up men and the director who could visualize so well.

The twists and turns of the movie are nicely managed. One doesn’t feel overwhelmed as one would in typical Hindi movies considering the penchant of Hindi movie writers to accomplish many impossibles in a short time.

The typical thief-police chase has been made really really interesting. Credit to the writers again.

Watch it. You might look at your friends in silly amused looks on occasions but at the end, you won’t mind them too much. You’ll enjoy yourselves and come out with a smile if I’m not wrong. Dhoom dhoom dhoom!
