OF COPS, THIEVES AND THRILLS ? DHOOM
In an absolute departure from its genre of romance, Yashraj Productions latest, DHOOM, is a thriller, which could leave your asking for more. There are no chiffons, wedding dance numbers or Swiss locales. What you get instead is a taut thriller, which keeps you glued to your seats. ACP Jai Dixit (Abhishek Bachchan) is trying to capture a gang of four thieves who have been responsible for a spate of robberies. They are professionals who execute the job and vanish without leaving behind a single lead.
What is known is that they come and go on state of the art motorbikes, which can outpace any vehicle. So the innovative ACP decides to take help of a garrulous mechanic. Ali (Uday Chopra) who is equally proficient with the bikes. And though the thieves are identified and their robberies foiled to some extent, yet they manage to escape leaving the cop frustrated.
But in the end the ACP catches up with them, playing their game their way, but only to be outsmarted again the ringleader kabir (John Abraham). It is the simple story line and the way it has been developed into thrilling and taut plot that holds you to the film. Add to this the sheer manner in which the sequences are mounted, the racy bikes and the in the face kind of attitude displayed by Abhishekh as the cop and John Abraham as the criminal mastermind, that lends all the élan that the film carries.
Uday chopra with his non-stop banter provides the much-needed relief, but this being his home production, he has been unnecessarily indulged with song sequences and footage. Esha as the love interest of Ali and a gang member plays her part mostly on the dance floor.
Rimi Sen as Abhishekh?s wife fits the bill. But it is the feel of the film; young vibrant, with its split screen images, the youthful look and the racy pace, which makes it, stand apart. Director Sanjay Gadhvi carries the film from start to finish without loosing steam or getting slack.
The music by Pritam matches the mood of the film. The number DHOOM MACHA LE is catchy not only because of the music but also for Esha?s efforts.
DHOOM is bound to do wonders for its young director and will finally announce the arrival of Abhishek Bachchan as a star and actor. So go catch the action.
