I call this the coffee movie because every two minutes Meena Kumari makes coffee for Raj Kumar. I wont go into the plot too much because someone has already done that, in detail. For those of you that watched the Rishi Kapoor/Preity Zinta/Gracy Singh movie Armaan, they stole the plot of Armaan from this movie(sigh..when are they going to stop pirating..hopefully a lawsuit or two should teach them a lesson). Anyway Meena Kumari and Raj Kumar do a better job here than they did in Pakeezah. I think that in Pakeezah the setting and the costumes were so lavish, they directed attention away from the actors. Whereas here the setting is more understated. This gave the actors a chance to emote more. Meena Kumari does a great job. You can actually feel the pain she is going through. In any case, Meena Kumaris weeping is much more believable than the overblown histrionics of todays heroines. The soundtrack, as you probably know already, is full of classics like the title song, Dil Apna aur Preet Paraiye. There are some magnificent shots in the movie, like the Diwali scene and the scene where she stands in the rain. The personalities of the characters are so finely drawn and realistic, you can sense a skillful writer lurking behind them. Unlike the romantic mush they sell now (Tum Bin, Mohabbatein), DAPP has mature characters that the audience can respect. The one major flaw in the movie is the villainess, Mrs. Raj Kumar. Otherwise, it is worth watching.
