Zest, sensation and life. This is what Dil Chahta Hai is all about. Ever since I saw the first promo of Dil Chahta Hai, I was bowled over and wanted to watch the movie as soon as possible. The music was so thrilling, the star cast was one of the best there could be and to top it all, the movie was a phenomenal comedy. What more could I ask for? This movie had everything that a good entertainer should have.
The movie starts off with a hospital scene where Sid (Akshaye Khanna) is shown taking a stretcher into the operation theatre. He calls Samir (Saif Ali Khan) to come to the hospital. Samir talks to Akaash (Aamir Khan) on the phone, but Akaash hangs up telling Samir to go and meet Sid alone and that he?s not coming. From there, the story of the three best friends, Aakash, Samir and Sid starts. In the flashback, the three friends are shown to be always together and there is one thing that they all have in common, they play little, harmless tricks on each other, be it getting Samir in trouble with his girlfriend, Priya, in the disco, or tossing paint at each other.
During this, Sid meets Tara (Dimple Kapadia) and falls in love with her. The three friends are always up to something or the other, until something goes on and the three friends split apart because of Tara. Samir decides to go to Sydney to take up his father?s business. There he meets Shalini (Preity Zinta) (again.) They spend time together with opposite beliefs about love. Listening to the song ?Jaane Kyon? might help in knowing their views about love. It?s difficult for Samir to keep up with Sonali Kulkarni (her name in the movie was?) The story revolves around a deeper and a more serious theme in the second half.
Aamir Khan ? After Aamir?s highly comical role in Andaaz Apna Apna, I had great expectations from him. After watching Dil Chahta Hai, I couldn?t stop raving about how terrific Aamir Khan is at comic roles. His comic timing, speech and expressions are insanely close to perfect, if not perfect. Almost all his scenes make one hit the rewind button and watch it again. Aamir Khan officially impressed me after this movie (although I liked his past performances as well.) Aamir did a fabulous job in Dil Chahta Hai.
Saif Ali Khan ? Saif, bollywood?s Jim Carrey, gets a big applaud for his performance. He manages to look like he doesn?t know what?s going on and that?s what made me laugh the most. His expressions, like Aamir?s, are top-notch and incredibly natural. Saif has a long way to go as far as comedy goes. He is stomach aching-ly (made up word!) funny!
Akshaye Khanna ? Akshaye does not appeal. He appears to be dull throughout the movie. His performance is not exuberant and full of life. Even his comic timing does not match up with the other two actors?. Akshaye was not the best choice for this role.
Preity Zinta ? suits the role accurately. She does full justice to her role. Shades of her real life show in her role as Shalini. And her dimples just add to the ?bubbly? personality. An awesome job by Ms. Zinta.
Dimple Kapadia ? Is simply too old for this role. I know the film makers wanted to have an older woman opposite Akshaye Khanna but Dimple looks like his mom. Other than that, her performance was okay.
Sonali Kulkarni ? was all right in the role that she had.
The songs are simply off the hook. SEL?s music is extremely vibrant and suits the different moods of the story. There is fast music as well as soft and slow melodies depending on the needs of the movie. The title song is beyond doubt the spunkiest song with all the instruments used in it. ?Jaane Kyon? and ?Kaisi hai yeh ruth? are pleasant in a form of slow songs.
On the whole, Dil Chahta Hai is a fun filled adventure with a lot of masti and a few sad moments. I didn?t like Dimple and Akshaye?s pairing at all, but other than that, this movie is a must watch. Just sit back, relax and laugh, a whole lot! Akhir, dil yahi to chahta hai. Kyun?
