A Night Spanning a Few Years

Farhan Akhtar is a superb director. That is one of the many things that strikes you when you watch this movie. The way he has handled the subject is really commendable. He is far more superior to his generation contemporaries. At the end of the experience you cannot help feeling that you have seen a very well made film.

The Plot

There is no plot really! The film deals with friendship, friendship and friendship! The whole film is shown in the flashbacks, which are beautifully woven around one fateful night in the hospital. Sid(Siddharth) is awaiting the death of his ladylove who has no chance of survival. As is the case with everyone, when the doctor tells him he can call anyone if he wishes, he naturally calls Sameer, who is his closest pal. Sameer rushes to the hospital, and both friends await the inevitable in the lounge of the hospital, and talk about the past! Their talks take the viewers in the past and the film unfolds.

We meet the three college mates Sid, Sameer and Akash, who are inseparable. The film shows their college crushes, the fun that they have, and in general, introduces the viewer to three specimens of today’s generation.

The youth! Who believe that life is for having fun, and yet have a heart of gold underneath.

The youth! Who believe that nothing is worth a serious thought, but still are well aware of what they want in life and how to achieve it!

The youth! Who believe that relationships are made to be broken, and yet can give their utmost to help a friend in need.

The youth! Who believe that there is always the back door to every problem, and yet, are always ready to face any difficulty and take it head-on!

We see the various love affairs that Sameer finds himself in, and yet cannot help noticing his unconditional attachment to his two pals!

We see the artist’s heart in the form of Sid!

We see the take-it-easy attitude of Akash, who believes that love is a game not to be taken seriously, and yet one cannot help noticing the grace with which he concedes the power and the way he stands up to get his love!

In short, Dil Chahta hain is the story of three friends who have different perceptions about love! The only thing that binds them together is their honesty towards their friendship.

Akash is the chap who believes that there is no such thing called love, but changes his opinion when he meets Shalini in Australia, where he goes to look after his father’s business.

Sameer is the fellow who falls in love at the drop of a hat, but real love comes from rather unexpected quarters....he falls in true love with the girl of his parents’ choice.

Sid is the artist. A man with a highly sentimental mind, one which only a painter can have, he falls in love with a divorcee who is 15 years elder to him.

All in all, Dil Chahta hain is a wonderful movie, providing an insight to the minds of the younger generation, who have their own beautiful way of looking at life, their own perception of what is right and wrong, their own way of facing the challenges of life!

Credits

Farhan Akhtar is a man to watch out for! He displays all the qualities needed to be a great director. He can only move ahead from here. By the way, he has also written the screenplay and dialogues.

Shankar Ehsan Loy have given superb music. Especially the background score! It’s mind-blowing! Watch out for the song Woh Ladki hain kahaan and Jaane Kyun.

Javed Akhtar supports ably with his https://lyrics. I especially loved the lyrics of the song Tanhai.

Ravi K Chandran’s cinematography and Yunus Pathan’s Art Direction is superb.

Aamir Khan as Akash has excelled in his role. This actor is just too much!

Saif Ali Khan as Sameer gives a hilarious performance. He keeps on improving!

Akshaye Khanna as Sid is good. I do not know how well he went down with the audience, but his expressions definitely depicted a thinking heart. He was really good!

Preety Zinta, Dimple Kapadia and Sonali Kulkarni give able support.

In Conclusion

It’s a must see if you are open to something different. It’s really a very good movie. If you have not yet seen it.....well, it’s about time you see something worthwhile!
