Ever fall in love? Do you believe in love? What is love? What is falling in love all about? Did you ever want to spend your entire life with somebody?
Sounds like any other love story, huh? Be it Bollywood or Hollywood..the concept of love still remains similar.
While I was getting young, curious about love, curious all about this cupid guy.. there comes a movie called DDLJ.
An unrealistically realistic movie.
Dunno about others, but this movie had an impact on me during those times.. 1995, when DDLJ hit the theaters. Well, im not a love stuck person, nor am I somebody who loves to watch chick flicks...but DDLJ is surely an exception.
Chaudhary Baldev Singh (Amrish Puri) is based in London, a true Indian at heart and a firm believer of indian values and culture. He expects or rather demands the same from his wife Lajwanti (Farida Jalal), and daughters Simran (Kajol) and Chutki(Pooja Rooparel). Like any other typical Indian father, he fixes the marriage of Simran with Kuljeet (Parmeet Sethi), son of his best friend in India, for the sake of her happiness and good future. (Dont mind the sarcasms!).
Simran meets Raj (Shahrukh Khan) on her Europe trip and falls in love with him in no time. But both realise their affinity towards each other when they part. Knowing Simrans feelings for raj, shes by force taken to India by her father to get married to Kuljeet. Raj, encouraged and supported by his father (Anupam kher) (ive rarely seen one of this kinds), sets for India to win back his dulhaniya. He wins over her family with his charms and the goodie stuff, and eventually the villain, Baldev Singh too. And Raj and simran lived happily ever after!
A closer look at the main characters of the movie:
Simran : A next door indian girl in UK, who dreams of her perfect man.
Raj : A guy who finds every other girl lovable and still feel something missing, until his Simran walks into his life.
Chaudhary Baldev Singh : A very common genre of a bollywood villain ...called POP.
All the characters are a mirror image of real life, yet the movie is so unrelaistic.
If only life was the same, if things worked out the DDLJ way, it wud have been a different world!
Someway or the other, each one of us, relate or wish to relate to Simran or Raj instantly. May be thats what makes DDLJ, adorable. The charismatic Sharukh and Kajol, the Chopra direction, the peppy numbers by jatin-lalit (special mention , Ruk ja o dil deewaane and Mere khabon mein), the charming, the teasing, the falling in love, the committment, and a happy ending... All mixed in apt proportions, garnished with chatpata bollywood masaala, is served as DDLJ..good to eat, with your valentine!
Whether Cupid/Love exists or not, DDLJ rocks!
Happy Valentines Day.
Senorita.
