Doctors, by Segal

Erich Segal’s Doctors makes for enthralling reading, not a surprise coming from this master of unputdownables. The book covers the lives of Barney Livingston, and Laura Castellano, and their entry into and settling in the medical world.

Laura’s a blonde beauty with brains. Her sister’s early death rocks her childhood, and Barney’s the next-door neighbour, to whom she can confide in. Barney and Laura’s friendship continues from their school-days, through their Med. College, and their career life, as a psychologist and paediatrician respectively.

Great supporting characters like a black kid, adopted by Jewish parents, Bennett Landsmann, and the doctor who believes in euthanasia far too far, Seth Lazarus offer a deeper perspective into the medical world. Far too long, but it would have to be this lengthy to cover the pivots’ story from the age of 6 to 40. A beautiful book, with forceful one-liners and characters one can relate to. A certain read. for aspirant docs.
