I read this book in Marathi. I like Sudha Murthys writings ( having read her newspaper articles, her writings about the people she met etc) but this one is far from what I had expected. A very plain novel where characters have only one side- e.g. Gauramma is only after money or Vinita is all full of suffering or Girish has no personality of his own. These characters do not reflect the complexity of human nature that you see in real life. The problems they face in life are too simple and the solutions they find out are also too simple. And thus the novel becomes a very predictable piece of work . The plot revolves around the miseries brought about by people running after money- dollar money to be precise. Chandru goes to US on an ISRO job and defects to another company, marries a rich mans daughter Jamuna. His brother Girish is a bank clerk and lives a simple lower middle class life with his wife Vinita and son Harsh. His mother wants his sister to marry and Indian boy in the US but could not. She gets the first hand experience of life of US Indians when she goes to Chandrus house for the delivery of his wife who gives birth to a daugther. The novel is full of characters which hardly ever develop in the flow of the novel. I finished the 150+ page book in one sitting and it did not leave any imprint on my mind. It is worth forgetting about.
