Disjointed Dostana

The much hyped film, Karan Johar’s latest "offering" to the audiences of Hindi movie, has been released. Dostana. A tale of friendship. Karan Johar has come out of the mould of the K movies and finally made a film. It is about loving your friends.again. But this time there is a triangle between two guys and a girl.

Okay, the story is set in Miami, where Samir aka Sam(atrociously dressed Abhishek Bachchan) and Kunal(deliciously built John Abraham) keep bumping into each other in various situations and finally they both land into a flat(on my my what a flat that is) which is in need of tenants. But the problem is that the landlady is not in favour of having two strapping young men living with her sexy niece, Neha(not out of Fashion wardrobe Priyanka Chopra) hence jeopardising her "honor". So they decide to present themselves as gay to the landlady and the niece(while deciding that sooner or later they would confess the truth to both of them). With time, the three develop a close friendship amongst each other. Sam and Kunal start falling in love with Neha and, in their own ways, try to woo her. Enter Neha’s new boss, Abhimanyu(ordinary looking Bobby Deol), who actually manages to capture her heart. New competition causes Sam and Kunal to join forces to play dirtiest games to win Neha back. But things backfire on them and how they actually backfire forms the rest of the story.

Story? Yeah well, if you must ask, it was a very simple plot. But the film was so patchy and the scenes were so disjointed that you lose focus of the story. The feeling that mainly came through was "Yeah okay, so they are trying to prove they are gay. Enough already!" Also, the growing friendship - transition from newly introduced roommates to close friends - was not smooth. One moment Sam and Kunal move in and the next moment they have pillow fights. I was actually bored(and trust me, wth me, boredom in a movie is not an easy feat to achieve) and I was looking forward to the intermission. The second half was a tad better than the first half. An amazing actress like Kirron Kher who plays Sam’s mother, is not used properly.

What is with Abhishek Bachchan’s wardrobe? Oh. My. God. He has worn the gaudiest clothes. Ever. He had a better wardrobe in his films like Tera Jadoo Chal Gaya. And I don’t think I have seen either of them, John or Abhishek, dressed properly in clothes such as trousers and shirts, except in a few shots here and there. And the dirty games they play! I mean what are we trying to prove here? That it is okay to poison someone’s mind because you can always tell the truth and then redeem yourself? It doesn’t work like that! Once you say something bad, the damage is done! Specially when you say something like that to a child as young as five.

Enough trashing. There are a few good things about the film. Priyanka Chopra’s wardrobe, specially her sari in Desi Girl(but she still looks like she hasn’t come out of Fashion fever); the music - Desi Girl, Khabar Nahi, Desi Girl - some of my favourites; John Abraham.

If you haven’t watched the film, you haven’t missed anything. I think Karan Johar should returned to his K mantra, because K is really lucky for him. Other letters won’t work now.
