Wear your attitude

After a 2 week long hiatus what better way to fire my opening salvo than to provide some fashion advice to you pub hoppers.? But hold on for a minute. a thought crosses my mind as I prepare to launch into the nitty gritty - I’m not sure if the term’pub’ in the context of Indian teen culture translates to what Americans refer to as a nightclub. Nevertheless pub or club, the idea is to enhance your aesthetic appeal, in most cases to attract attention. Being a rather low profile character by nature, my choice of attire and accessories might seem rather insipid to some of you but in my experience, I’ve managed to appear dignified without compromising my youth!

Attire is attitude

The fashion mantra that drives many designers today. Your attire is a direct reflection of your personality and can be a statement by itself. The clothes you wear, among other things, will speak volumes about you. Whether you choose to dress up or down, wear your attitude. Whether you’re just another brick in the wall or the quintessential fashion freak always express yourself with what you wear. The more honest you are about your attire, the more appealing you will be to people around you.

Be comfortable

Being uncomfortable is an unfortunate consequence of attempting to be someone you clearly are not. Deriving from other people’s fashion ideas is not bad as long as you are comfortable being who you are at the end of the day. Don’t overdo it. If you feel what you wear compromises who you are then you’re shooting yourself in the foot. If you want to dress up wear something that allows you to breathe, dressing up isnt always about the clothes you wear, it’s about the way you move with the clothes you have on. If you’re dressed to kill but look like you’re ready to pass out from lack of oxygen then you’re as likely to get looked at as an insect in the wall.

Be confident

Have faith in what you wear. If you dare to go the extra mile with your clothes then be prepared to carry yourself off with the same flair as your clothes. If you end up being a damp squib you risk becoming the alternate entertainment in the pub. People at pubs notice you even if you think they’re not looking. The furtive glances happen in a fraction of a second and assessments and size-ups happen even quicker. So if you want to look your best, be ready to rock the joint!

Smell good

A very wise man once said, you are the cologne/perfume you wear. The wise man grew wise the hard way. If you are on the prowl in a pub or club you absolutely need to smell like you’re on the prowl. Pubs and clubs tend to become claustrophobic smoke filled environments very quickly and the last thing you want to do is contribute to the asphyxiating deluge of smells around you. If your glands work overtime be generous when you use your cologne. But dont overdo it if your cologne smells worse than your sweat.

Formals and sneakers?

I was at a couple of pubs in Chennai recently and I had the fortune(or misfortune) of seeing some guys in work clothes and sneakers(?) frequenting these pubs. A pub or a club is a place where looking good is probably at the top of the agenda. Again it’s your choice because you are wearing your attitude but golly that attitude(or lack of it) will really not do you any good. Wear something at least remotely dressy when you’re going out. It doesnt have to be designer wear but you need to at least let people know you care about looking halfway decent, if not anything else.

Dressing up is not an ordeal. Taken in the right perspective, it actually is fun. Looking good and grooming yourself can pay pretty rich dividends.(Take it from me.)If you dont care about the way you look then you are truly missing out. I might sound conceited here but society has unfortunately been trained to notice only people that consciously make an effort to make themselves noticed. It’s one of those indulgences that, in an increasingly fashion conscious trendy age, you need to undergo in order to keep up with the joneses.
