Wherever the world is in danger, a Xavier will arrive in this world.   What is the quality of such a warrior?  He will have love as his shadow, faith as his strength and dharma is his sword and he will stick with his decisions until the goal is attained.  Even in his last breath he will wake up to the call of duty.   Drona is the story of such a warrior who came to the rescue of the world where demons determined to possess ’amrita’.

The film is formatted as a good night story to a child by her mother.

The royal child Aditya (Abhishek Bachchan) had a struggling childhood.  After asuras killed his father his mother moved him to safety and sent abroad.   Riz Raizada (Kay Kay Menon) is a world famous magician but the world didn’t know that he is in his search of ’Drona’ to get ’amruta’ and thereby aiming immortality.  He is all prepared to conquer the world with his own clones.  He too has superficial powers.   On a visit to abroad, ’Drona’ and ’Riz Raizada’ came face to face.  Riz Raizada immediately recognized that it is Drona and his chase started.  The ordinary man in Aditya gives way to the Drona in him where Sonia (Priyanka Chopra) came as a protector to him as a shadow where the duty was assigned to her from childhood.  The fight between good and bad has just started.  Watch the rest on screen.

Drona is more western in approach and look of a good Hollywood movie.   The movie’s technical side did a wonderful job, almost flawless.   However, the script was not that supportive.   The movie started with an ok mood but soon shifted to a western land which did much harm to the film.    Once the meeting between Aditya and Riz is fixed things get improved but after the interval the story again moved in a slow pace.  The end was brilliant.  So the movie is a mixed bag of some excellent scenes, some ordinary scenes and yes, few avoidable scenes.

Abhishek Bachchan is ok in the film but this is not his best performance.   He looks sleepy in the first half, especially where he plays the ordinary Aditya.   Priyanka Chopra on the other hand shows improvement in the film.  There is fire in her eyes, at least in few scenes and I will rate her performance as good.   Kay Kay Menon excels as the villain and proved his class even as a villain!!   Jaya bachchan is simply superb in her small role.

Music and choreography of the movie is ok in part.  Two songs are done well, the one with Jaya Bachchan and Abhishek, the other one with Priyanka Chopra with black dancers.   Otherwise the music and choreography don’t support the film much.    Editing could have been better.

Animation/Graphics are of high quality.    They simply match to the international standards.   Whether the film is a hit or flop, it doesn’t take away the brilliance shown in many such scenes.  Good work!!    The sets were colourful, and good.   Only in one stage the sets look amateurish, i.e. in the dream world of gossips.

The script failed to hold the movie together well.   The grip is missing.   The writer didn’t fix a time span for the movie.   If it is a modern day movie, bullets and machine guns could have been used.  It is a surprise that a villain who uses cloning, but don’t use machine guns to conquer enemies.   If it is done in olden days it should have avoided the cloning and foreign locals where the heroine saves the hero in sports cars but don’t have a gun to protect him.  No time the director gave an upper hand to the hero, but to the villain.   Even at the end the hero just escape for a very narrow margin.

There are some brilliant scenes in the movie which mark it as something special.

  1. Kay Kay Menon’s treatment of the naked clone (Kay Kay himself).

  2. Abhishek lifting the gate and scaring away opponents.

  3. The climax fight

  4. Abhishek opening the first door of the Gossipland.

  5. Scenes between Kay Kay Menon and Jaya Bachchan.

  6. The train sequences where Abhishek and Priyanka fight villains.

The movie only lacks a good script which hold together and a bit more involvement by its actors.  Otherwise every thing was perfect.  Then, see how these two factors take its toll on the otherwise brilliant film.

Despite’s its strong merits in good visuals, the movie may not be accepted by the Metro audience but the producers may keep their hope since it is very much for the liking of the audience from Hindi Heartland.  The efforts by Goldie Behl need appreciation but at the same time wish she could have managed to give a better soul to the film.   Children will enjoy the movie along with all those interested to see bollywood slowly and steadily stepping to the Hollywood shoes.

At the end of the movie, it gives excellent situations and good visuals but as a total product the film fall short of excellence.
