Drona in Wonderland!

A fun filled trip to the world of magic and fantasy!

Drona is all about a brave king Aditya and his battle with the mayavi rakshas called Riz. and his mission of guarding the Amrit. The plot is so-so. But the screenplay is very nice. The movie grips from start to end and your are engrossed till the last scene.

Also,  there are some tear jerking moments which make you feel for Drona’s loneliness.

Word of caution: To enjoy this movie, you must be able to believe the fantasy world that is shown in the movie. If you are able to believe in the mythological concepts like Asur, Amrit, Dron, Maya nagari, etc. you will be able to enjoy the movie.

Performances:

Abhishek Bachchan: Nice performance. Abhishek looks a real king with an aura of great courage and nobility. In some scenes his screen presence is just brilliant. Such that in spite of his unshaved, unkepmt look, we are glued to his eyes and try to decipher the emotion he expresses through them. But sadly, he does not show the same brilliance through the rest of the movie. Still his performance can be rated as good, though not great.

Priyanka Chopra: Priyanka looks amazing whenever she is not wearing her turban but with that turban on she is not that convincing. Priyanka is not very good as an action heroine. Someone with better acting skills could have done more justice to that role.

Chemistry between Abhishek & PChops is good and quite believable.

KK. Menon: KK is superb as funny, psycho villain.  He makes you laugh, yet he makes you believe that he is the bad, bad boy. He is hilarious and yet menacing. Very nice performance. He also gets some brilliant dialogues. Or he delivers them in such a way that they sound something very new..

Visual effects are stunning.

Background score is very catchy. In fact many of the gripping moments in the movie belong to the background score and visual effects.

Direction is good. Cinematography is good.

Music is Ok. Some songs good, and well suited to the plot. But the Oop Cha song is really out of place.

Some doubts:

  1. All of the messages for Drona are written in Sanskrit. But the last one is written in Hindi. Why?

  2. The ending is quite clichéd.

  3. Sometimes the reasons behind Drona’s quest are not clear.

  4. The significance of blue color for rose petals is not justified.

My Verdict: It should turn out a Hit, if not Super-Hit. It cannot be as successful as Krrish but it should do good business. (Well that’s a guess! Nobody knows which movie will be hit or flop. But, If Sing is King can become a Hit then Drona definitely deserves better.)

Some people have said how Drona has lifted from Hollywood films like Harry Potter, Lord of the rings, etc. But for a desi viewer who hasn’t watched all these movies, Drona makes a good original(!) cinematic experience. And even if one may watch these English versions, Drona will still be enjoyable, because you can identify with the desi culture shown in it,

Overall, good time pass fantasy movie, 6.5/10.
