Education-A Service and not a Business

Education has become the big business today.Yes it is true that schools, colleges, polytechnics, coaching centres, tutorials, computer centers every thing has become a big business in which you can double or triple the amount you have invested initially.

My emphasis is on growing number of engineering colleges(private) in tamilnadu.

I don’t know what are the norms of AICTE to approve a college. What is AICTE is doing there?how they approved all these private colleges. The number of engineering colleges are around 300 in tamilnadu out of 300 only 10 are government colleges the rest are private colleges. Here in this review I don’t mention all the private college and I know that some of the private colleges are really good and those are exceptions.

1)most of the private colleges don’t have good faculties.they appoint freshers as faculties and they get a minimum salary.they lack in experience and obviously they cannot teach the students well.

2)most of the private colleges doesn’t have good infrastructure, lab facilities, hostels, computer labs etc., even some colleges have half constructed buildings and they get brick loads, cement bags as donation from the students for completing the construction.

3)They get very high amount as fees per year in the name of transportation fees, computer fees, hostels fees, stationery fees, library fees, development charges, caution deposit, cultural fees, sports fees.......etc., thank god the tution fees has been fixed by the government but the tution fees fixed by the government is also more that a lower middle class, lower class people cannot afford. But for management quota the college itself fixes the fee .

4)some of them colleges are running even without getting approval from AICTE .

5)with all the above draw backs how can one expect standard education from a (some)private colleges. Even though the colleges are affiliated by Anna University now, and though the syllabus of Anna university is standard, one cannot expect good education from these colleges. As the syllabus of Anna university is very tough these private colleges strive a lot to make thier college a number one college in tamilnadu and so they dump the students like anything. Some colleges have classes even on sundays and there is no time for the students to relax and they get exhausted.

Because of these growing number of colleges, it has become like if you have money anybody can become an Engineer, it is just enough to get a pass mark in XII board exam.Does everyone who merely pass in XII deserve to be a good engineer. And because of this Engineering is also loosing its value.

why all this happens ?

It is all mainly because of the attitude of students and parents. They blindly belive that Engineering and Medicine are the main professional careers that can get you good job and more salary after finishing the studies.Secondly, the craze about computer science. They never mind about the college, they prefer to pay any amount to get a computer science seat in a private college than getting a mechanical or civil engineering seat in a good government college.

there are lot of options don’t stick to engineering and medicine alone. there are good careers in catering technology and hotel management, fashion technology, bio technology, ayurveda, siddha, physiotherapy, homeopathy, pharmaceuticals, management studies etc., Even in engineering don’t stick to computer science and ECE alone there are a lot of different options like mechanical engg (evergreen) , marine, aeronautical, instrumentation etc.,

it is the hightime that the government and AICTE should cancel the approval of the private colleges that lack in facilities and that has the above mentioned drawbacks and reduce the number of colleges otherwise there will be many engineers coming out every year without job and it leads to serious unemployment problems in the future.

A request to educational institutions&teachers

PLEASE REMEMBER EDUCATION iS A SERVICE AND NOT A BUSINESS

TEACHING IS THE NOBLE PROFESSION AND NOT A MERE JOB.
