A Strange movie, but worth watching

I know that this movie was based on the German hit, Run Lola Run, which I liked very much, and that is the main reason I wanted to see this one.   I watched this movie quite a while ago, and so I cannot remember every detail. But I do want to give it a plug as a movie unusual enough to warrant some attention.

The revolves around the character played by Nandita Das, who receives a phone call from her boyfriend telling her she needs to amass a huge amount of money to save him from a gambling debt. Being the loving girlfriend she is, she manages to get the money, I recall by force, from her rich papaji, and then attempts to make the journey to the waterfront to deliver the goods with the 24 hours. I

It just so happens that the city of Mumbai (where the story takes place) is ’’on strike’’, something that I never heard of living in the shelter of America, and the streets are deserted except for the occasional dangerous protesters and other violent prone types. This makes the whole atmosphere of the film very surreal. Das did a good job as she escapes the perils of the deserted streets of Mumbai, pursued by a police officer among other things.

Rahul Bose as her no good boyfriend also does a fine job in the movie.

Although the movie is loosely based on Run Lola Run, it does diverge enough to make it quite different in many ways. The plot has some flaws, but to me this is a fine example of a good BW movie for those who want more than songs and random acts of violence in a movie plot.
