Their TUNES and their HEARTBEATS...!

After the successful Vivah, Barjatyas are back with Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi. But let’s get one thing straight-both the films deal with the institution of marriage but both are as different as chalk and cheese-in terms of storyline, execution and emotions. However Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi, like Vivah, works big time chiefly for its simplicity. More on it later.

The story of the movie: Chandni (Eesha Koppikhar) and Prem (Sonu Sood) meet each other in a music competition. Both get selected and get a chance to perform together at the national level. In the course of this journey, both fall in love with each other. Chandni’s father (Alok Nath) and Prem’s mother (Smita Jayakar) also approve of this relationship and give a go-ahead for their engagement and marriage. Everything was going perfect. But on the day of the engagement, tragedy struck in Chandni’s family. The tragedy and the resultant circumstances compel Chandni to back off from marrying Prem.

Sometimes the greatest love stories are the one that stand the test of time’… that’s what Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi tries to state and it does it wonderfully. The major advantage of Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi is that it’s a family saga and nowadays, hardly anyone makes such a film. That’s why Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi comes as refreshment even though the film is not a classic. Even if the film is not as fantastic as Vivah, Hum Saath Saath Hai and Hum Aapke Hai Koun, the film succeeds in touching your heart.

The first half of this film was just excellent! Even though there are six songs in the first half, the film doesn’t get boring or the pace doesn’t get hampered because the story moves in the songs too. With so many songs, Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi can easily be hailed as a musical film! However, the best sequence of the first hour has to be the tragic scene which takes the film to a new high. In most Rajshri films the tragedy occurs in the 2nd half, but that’s not the case in this film.

Things go well in the 2nd half too. The sequences and events were touching but don’t create enough drama to keep the viewer’s interest alive. Also, I strongly feel Sooraj Barjatya himself should have directed the film instead of giving the direction’s responsibility to Kaushik Ghatak. Sooraj Barjatya, with his magical touch, would have surely taken the film to new heights.

Both Sonu Sood and Eesha Koppikhar were equally mindblowing! Both were lucky enough to bag a Rajshri film and take full advantage of this opportunity and do a great job. If you felt Sonu Sood gave his career’s best performance in Singh Is Kinng, you’ll have second thoughts after watching him in this film! He comes up with such an honest performance that everyone will surely like him. After Salman and Shahid, this new Prem of Rajshri will also surely win many hearts!

This is surely Eesha Koppikhar’s best performance of her career. She does full justice to her character and very well portrays the sacrificing sister. Kudos to the Barjatyas for placing trust in an actress like Eesha! Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi will surely bring a positive change in Eesha Koppikhar’s carrer.

Alok Nath was as usual excellent as the doting dad. No movie of Rajshri is complete without him! Vallabh Vyas as Dr Prabhat also comes up with an honest performance. Amrita Prakash, who played Amrita Rao’s sister in Vivah, plays Eesha’s sister in this film and does a fantastic job. Vishal Malhotra as Eesha’s younger brother Anuj is the surprise of the film! This funny guy plays a serious role in the film and does a marvelous job! Chhavi Mittal as Natasha played her part perfectly. Kunal Kumar, Smita Jayakar, Anang Desai were okay. Mushtaq Khan as the ‘whistling guy’ was funny. Others were good.

Ravindra Jain’s music was pure and truly melodious. His lyrics were simple but quite touching. Almost all the songs such as ‘Dekhe Akele Humne Solah Mele’, ‘Mujhme Zinda Hai Woh’, ‘Kya Soch Ke Aaye The’, ‘Jhirmir Jhirmir Megha Barse’, ‘Banna Banni’, ‘Lo Ji Hum Aa Gaye’, ‘Neend Mein Hai’ are excellent and they are well-picturised too.

Ashapurna Devi and Sooraj Barjatya’s story was great but it was completely like the one in the film Tapasya (1976), which was also produced by Rajshri Productions. In fact, one can even say that Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi is a remake of Tapasya!

Shashi Mittal and Sushil Mittal’s screenplay and dialogues were topnotch. Especially the dialogues were brilliant and very touching.

Finally Kaushik Ghatak’s direction was great no doubt but could have been better. But he picturised the songs wonderfully. There were 6 songs in the 1st half yet the film doesn’t get slow or boring thanks to Ghatak’s able direction. I wish him all the luck for his next film!

Some of the best scenes of the film:

1.    The first scene of the film

2.    Prem and Chandni in the bus

3.    Prem and Chandni rehearsing together

4.    Prem and Chandni in the train

5.    The tragedy (brilliant!)

6.    The raksha bandhan sequence (best scene of 2nd half!)

7.    All songs (well shot)

8.    The climax

On the whole, Ek Vivaah Aisa Bhi is a simple story well told. It is not as great as Vivah and Hum Aapke Hai Koun but yet, it’ll touch your heart for two seasons-its simplicity and second, you hardly get to see such simple, clean family films nowadays. Watch this film with your family for some refreshment!
