Good Story Badly Narrated

Some movies entertain you, some movies bore you, and some give you a headache. Ek Vivah Aisa Bhi falls in the third category. It’s a typical Barjatya fare – shudh shakahari but the problem is that its tasteless.

Story:-

Chandni (Isha Koppikar) lives with her father and two young siblings. She is an aspiring singer. During a music competition she meets Prem (Sonu Sood) and they fall in love. Their wedding is arranged but on the day of their engagement, Chandni’s father passes away. Chandni cancels her wedding and decides to bring up her brother and sister on her own. Prem stands by her decision and vows to wait till she fulfils all her responsibilities. …….

Performances & Impact:-

This movie has not been directed by Sooraj Barjatya and it shows. It could have been an entertaining movie had it been directed by a competent director. The scenes are shallow, so are the performances. Most of the characters just do not make sense. None of the scenes leave an impact – the romance between Chandni and Prem is half-baked and supported by bad songs. After her father’s death when she announces her decision  to Prem he doesn’t even bat an eyelid and says – fine I will wait forever. What should have been the most effective scene in the movie is wrapped up in two minutes. Post interval the movie get even more unbearable. Koppikar’s efforts to be self-reliant after her father’s death are laughable. After a point of time you get irritated by the diabetes inducing sweetness. The end of the movie is so absurd that I wanted to throw something at the screen.

Isha Koppikar had an author backed role but she is unable to leave an impact as she only has 3 fixed expressions in the whole movie. Sonu Sood makes a sincere attempt and shines even in the insipid scenes. He is an actor to watch out for. The rest of the cast is nothing to write home about.

Technically:-

The direction is BAD. Whoever has directed this movie is a wannabe Sooraj Barjatya but lacks the emotional punch that Sooraj B. brings to his movies. The music belongs to the 80’s cinema so does the art direction. The dialogues lack depth. Sorry I am going on and on but I just can’t find anything good to say!

My final verdict:-

I am not a Barjatya-hater. I had thoroughly enjoyed Hum Aapke Hain Kaun and Vivah. But this movie just makes a mockery of the Barjatya school of filmmaking. Vivah was slow and had a wafer-thin storyline, yet it worked because it had depth and emotional connect with the audience. Ek Vivah Aisa Bhi is shallow and you just don’t feel for any character. What could have been an emotional saga of sacrifice and true love ends up being a drag. A total waste of time and money.
