ELKAVYA ,THE SHAKESPEAREAN FARCE

Vinod chopra has made some worthwhile movies in the past , parinda , khamosh , kareeb , munna bhai

so you expected something really on the scale of a magnum opus like pakeeza or mughale azam , unfortunately for everybody this is trash cinema making at its worst .

first let me say indian cinema is very rich with diverse movies like sahib bibi ghulam to vishals omkara last year , this shakespearean ripoff seems to be moulded out of king lear , hamlet , and macbeth.

The visuals are inspired by european directors like antonioni and bertolucci , obviously the intention is to make across between sahib bibi and leopard , but you need more then a good camera man to do so , you need a script and powerful dialogues , the actors here are not to be blamed , they have nothing to do or say its mr chopras script which falters in every sequence .

In a nutshell the king of a state is impotent , his wife is impregnated by his body gaurd and twins are born , its supposed to be a sacred secret except eveyone knows of it , into this medley is inserted a struggle between rajas and farmers and the obligatory greedy relatives , the twins are saif and raima who both give awfully melodramatic performances , jackis and sunjay are the villainous brother and the shudra cop , they look hideuus and act even worse .

The whole movie descends into a mayhem of melodrama unseen on indian screen in recent years , the dialogues are hilarious at times , the cinematography tries to make it look artistic but irritates instead .

mr chopra is no goddard or guru dutt , please restrict to munnabhai and parinda ,

now the big question what does big b do , he does nothing he has not already done better then here in trishul , dev and khaki , he is now wasting himself sharmila in aone scene role is very missable.

But she was the only person who looks good in a scene from the past in a flashback , all the other stars look hideous .

the lesson is if you want to make movies like the avant garde european cinema get some origonal ideas rather then a mixture of shakespearean ripoffs combined with some ugly old superstars and a crumbly old castle with some camels in rajistan .

You might make a second hand travel brochure to that great land but as to capture any emotion which is must for good cinema  youll be lost like a camel in a sandstorm N a serious pseudo artistic trash pretending to be a bertolucci movie , a must avoid dud , at your own peril venture forth , and if you fall asleep dont blame me ,

so the rating one star for the pigeon scene . Better luck next time mr chopra , please go back to munnabhai and parinda . you are no guru dutt
