A Musical Family in Fine Form

A Musical family in Fine Form:

We all know that Heroes, Directors who have a family background in nexus with cinema, dominate Kollywood. This case is of no exception when it comes to music directors as well. One known Musical family belongs to the Music Maestro Dr. Illayaraja. We have listened too many talks flaunting Yuvan Shankar Raja and Karthic Raja(s/o Illayaraja) about their musical contributions in recent films. I am here to throw light upon the fine form displayed by the family of Deva in recent films.

A cub can pounce twice as much as its father (Lion). This proverb best suits the upcoming music director Srikanth Deva (s/o Deva). His songs were appealing in the movie ‘Doubles’ but they were not able to create waves of impression amongst the listeners and the movie as such bombed as well. The climate remains numb before the storm strikes. Likewise He remained silent for four years until he got the opportunity to compose music in ‘Kuthu’. After the audio release of ‘Kuthu’ people recognized his lambasting approach to ‘Gana’ songs with ‘Pottu thakku song’ becoming the song of the masses, which was following closely the success of ‘Apadi Podu’ during the middle of the year 2004. Deva was a trendsetter when it comes to composing ‘Gana’ songs in movies. But talking about Srikanth Deva, his digital mixing of beats in Gana songs have added a new dimension to such songs. Then came M. Kumaran s/o Mahalaxshmi where he proved his potential to compose touching melodies such as ‘Neeye Neeye’, one of the all time hits songs relating mother sentiment. The above-mentioned movie was the launching pad for Srikanth Deva to compose music for major projects such as Sivakasi, Bambara Kannale and the songs in these two movies are also Super hits.

He has the knack of delivering super hit songs with Udit Narayanan as the singer eg: “Aiyo Aiyo from M. Kumaran, Arjuna Arjuna from Aei, Bambara Kannalae Pacha Kutha Vandalae from Bambara Kannale, and Enatha Solvenungo from Sivakasi”. Amongst the list of young music directors, Srikanth Deva has the maximum number of projects in hand. The total number of projects exceeds 10, which includes Acharya, E, Saravana, Vetrivel Sakthivel, Pattasu, Thalaippu Cheidi, Thotta, Kakhi, Sudesi, Pattasu, Naalai Mudhal, A Telugu film featuring actress Sneha, Petrol, Thagappansami, Yaam Irukka Bhayam Yen etc ... As the songs from Sivakasi are a runaway success out of the films released for Deepavali, they have been a major factor behind the commercial hit of Sivakasi (especially the numbers Ennatha Solvenungo and Vada Vada Thozha). Since the chemistry between Vijay and Srikanth Deva has worked well we can expect the duo to combine again in future projects, which is also applicable for other major Heroes in Kollywood as well.

Kollywood has witnessed cameramen turning into successful directors. Since they are well versed in tuning camera angles the job of a director turns easier for them. The logic is the same when it comes to composing songs as well. Here is an example of the story behind re-recording/orchestration specialists turning into successful music directors. They are none other than Sabesh-Murali. They are the siblings of ‘Thenisai Thendral’ Deva and they have simply been the soul behind super hit songs composed by renowned MDs such as Deva, A.R. Rehman, Bharatwaj, etc…Their recent hallmark is the re-recording for the movie Autograph. Bharatwaj is a melody specialist, Sabesh-Murali are re-recording specialists, P. Vijay is a lyric specialist, and Chitra is a singing specialist has indeed made the song ‘Ovoru Pookalumae’ special overall. Such an excellent combo have presented this song which simply has won accolades and awards (National Award for Chitra for the same song needs special mention). This may be the reason why Cheran has opted for Sabesh Murali as the MDs for his movie Thavamai Thavamirundu. Dear friends try finding one fault in the songs composed by the duo. If you are successful in doing so I will stop writing reviews on mouthshut.com. The RR’s, background, songs are sure to win them some award or the other in future. They started their career, as MD in the movie ‘Samudram’, the song ‘Alagana Chinna Devadai’ was a corner stone behind their potential to compose melodies. Their efforts in the yet to be released movie ‘Adaikalam’ needs a special mention. The songs in the movie such as ‘Ada Konda Cheval, Vilaku Onru, Oyirae Piriyadae’ has proved the fact that melodies can be soothing and evergreen to listen to by using musical instruments not more than four or five. They certainly join the list of music directors such as Illayaraja, S.A. Rajkumar, and Bharatwaj. who can deliver super hit melodies using very few musical instruments. Let’s wish them all the very best for their future projects and to keep the same spirits lifted up.

Though Deva does not have any major projects in hand right now, he is doing an excellent job by bringing up fresh musical talents available in his own family. Don’t forget the fact that the family of Deva is considered to be one of the very few nuclear families known to us. If he is going to continue giving a lending hand to his family members in the field of music it would strengthen his family bonding even further (another example being the introduction of his younger brother Siva into music composition in ‘Sorry Enakku Kalyanam Aidichi’). I would like to end up wishing the family of Deva all the very best to continue their fine form in which they are right now in their future projects as well.
