A restaurant promoted by
Mahadevan of Hot Breads fame raises expectations and Ente Keralam lives up to
its promise as an up market restaurant serving good food from God’s Own
Country.
Its located in Alwarpet in
what looks like a house converted into a restaurant, a bit like its Thai sister
Benjarong. The ambience is pleasant without being posh and the waiters are dressed in traditional
Kerala style.
The first thing we noticed
on the menu were a few innovative items. They have tweaked some typical Kerala
dishes and modified them to make it interesting. For example, they have taken the “ela ada”, which is usually a dessert wrapped
in banana leaf, and replaced the traditional stuffing of grated coconut and jaggery, by meat. It was rather nice. However, we could not try
the kappa biriyani(Rs 145) or Erachi
pathiri(Rs 160 like the ela ada), as they were sold out.
The Talaisery fish curry
prevailed over the Alleppey variety(both come at Rs. 195), when it came to the
main dish, which we had with the traditional red rice meal. It was delicious
but we definitely have to try the latter on the next visit. The starters menu
includes some nice beef cutlets(Rs 140), which we tried and Paripu vada(Rs
85), which we postponed for another day.
The menu includes Prawn
kari (Rs 394), Fish Moilee(Rs 195), as
well as duck. The soups are listed at a maximum of Rs 85, and there is a tempting Dessert Platter
consisting of two ice creams and one payasam. Considering it is a
speciality Keral restaurant, I think the payasams should outnumber the ice
creams!
The food was really good as
was the service. Worth repeated visit. This is a good place to take foreign
guests if you like to introduce them to Kerala cuisine.
