If you have lost someone very dear to you - your lover/ your parents/ your pet or anyone dearest to you - but have their memories(good & bad) linger in your mind, trouble you forever making your life sad and lonely. Then one day you find an option to completely erase all their thoughts from your mind, would you opt for it ? Well this is the premise of the movie. Wouldnt you like this option.
Everyone has had a relationship or a person theyd much rather just forget. However, when the film ends and the credit rolls on the screen, you really will look at everything inside your mind - your memories - and all your relationships from a completely different perspective.
This is one of the ultimate thinker films. It raises so many questions and so many emotions that it makes you think lot after you have left the theatre and please I would encourage you to think. First of all, it has one of the most realistic depictions of a relationship I have ever seen. The ups, the downs, even the most awkward moments.
Eternal Sunshine tells the story of two troubled lovers, Joel (Jim Carrey) and Clementine (Kate Winslet). Clementine leaves Joel one night after a feud, and the next time Joel sees her, she has no memory of him or their relationship. Angry, hurt, and confused, Joel then learns Clementine had her memories of him deleted by a company called Lacuna, specializing in such procedures. In a moment of anger and stupidity, Joel decides hell get revenge on Clementine by deleting her from his memory.
Halfway through the procedure, in the subconscious mind, a part of him becomes aware of what is occurring and as he experiences a particularly fond memory of his with Clementine evaporate into non-existence, he realizes the foolishness of the choice he has made and Joel spends the rest of the night racing through his mind with Clementine to try to find safety from the erasing procedure.
The story sounds convulted and strange, but its brings forth a deep concern and how important our memories are, even though you might not like them sometimes, but then your memories are all you will ever have, even when you lose everything and everyone!
At any rate, do yourself a favor and catch this movie. Its touching, very clever, and shows off some good performances. It also makes you cherish the memories you have - good and bad.
Go with someone who can appreciate a good movie (you would be lucky if you have an intelligent lover/buddy) (I saw it alone!). Please do not go in expecting a laugh fest with Jim Carrey. It isnt !!
