This movie is basically meant to be funny and is directed by Ivan Reitman who also did great entertainment films like ’’Animal House’’, ’’Twins’’, ’’Ghostbusters’’ etc... With a line-up like that, you have to know you are going to be in for a treat. This movie was written by Don Jakoby.
This film is rated PG13.. most probably because of some crude and sexual humor, and even for sci-fi action. There are lots of gross scenes and general alien yuckiness. The aliens are really fun to see(You know, evolution???), but mildly disgusting...and isn’t that what you watch a movie like this for? As per me for sure it is! I saw this movie last weekend. To give an idea of what the movie is about:
The movie begins with a meteor slamming into the desert. A fireman is getting ready for his test to be conducted on the next day morning. The meteor almost annihilates the ’’Fireman-in-Training’’. The meteor punches itself into a deep underground cavern system. All type of stuff begins to grow on and around it. On this two local geologists are called in, Ira Kane (David Duchovny) and Harry Block (Orlando Jones). They take some samples and begin studying them back at the University. When the government steps in, Allison Reed (Julianne Moore) becomes the expert in charge. This doesn’t sit well with the other two.
In the meantime, Evolution is taking place. All sorts of lifeforms evolve. So due to the meteor strange alien animals begin to show up. Firstly some flatworms evolve, then small creatures, then water creatures, then larger lizard-like things and then an enormous flying reptile that smashes into a mall. It tries to fly off with a shoplifter. Each incident is immensely funny, as well as thrilling and exciting.
To say about David Duchovny I am a fan of X-Files. I didn’t think David could do well in a comedy. He is hysterical in this film.
Orlando Jones steals the show with his sly, wicked grin and over-sized eyeballs. He goes from being a cool and confident teacher/geologist to a panic-stricken idiot in record time. His performance is something you just cannot miss!
Julianne Moore, is more as a clumsy yet beautiful geologist, Allison Reed, that is working for the government under the evil Flemming (Ty Burrell). She is the love interest for Ira Kane(David Duchovny) and their flirtation is very cute.
Dan Aykroyd was pretty funny as the Mayor of the desert town where the meteor struck down.
The end is a lot of fun and is quite an extravaganza of repulsion. You will be totally surprised with what is it that will destroy this alien menace. So to find out what kills the aliens and even to laugh your way about I would recommend you to go ahead and watch this movie...
